THAILAND: Ao Prao beach to reopen on November 1

 

RAYONG, 29 October 2013 (NNT) – The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and PTT Global Chemical Plc have assured the public that Ao Prao beach will be reopeed to the public on November 1 after a thorough inspection. Both parties issued a joint statement saying that, after conducting extensive tests on 12 beaches on the island, they found that the sea off Koh Samet’s Ao Prao and nearby areas, affected by the July 27 oil spill, have returned to normal since the end of September.

Suu Kyi: I started as a politician not a human rights defender

 

Democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi has dismissed criticisms of her leadership by insisting that she has always been a politician, rather than a human rights defender.

It follows accusations that the opposition leader has prioritised her presidential ambitions ahead of the protection of minorities in Burma. Many analysts say she has made been forced to abandon her principles in order to secure her political power base.

But speaking in an interview with CNN on Monday, Suu Kyi rejected suggestions that she has been forced to transition from activist to politician.

Ye Htut rebukes Shwe Mann over president bid claims

Burma’s presidential spokesperson has rebuked parliamentary speaker Shwe Mann for telling a press conference that Thein Sein would not be seeking a second term in office.

Speaking to DVB on Monday, Ye Htut said that any remarks made by President Thein Sein to Shwe Mann were made in private and should not have been shared with the media.

“When there is a matter that the public should be informed about, the president will directly address the public himself. There is no need for a second person to do that,” he admonished.

“The president may have shared his views with the parliamentary speaker in a private meeting but he only meant to share it with him. According to international procedures, one cannot disclose this kind of information to the public without seeking permission from by the other party.”

Grand Opening of first US Law Firm HRMR in Myanmar

HRMR was granted a license to open a law office in Yangon, which, the firm claims, makes it the first US investor in the professional services industry to take full ownership investment in the jurisdiction under the new 2012 Myanmar Investment Law.

The new office is registered as Herzfeld Rubin Meyer & Rose Law Firm and is staffed by both American and Myanmar lawyers. The firm’s of counsel Eric Rose has relocated from New York to Yangon to lead the new outpost from the US side. Rose has more than 25 years of experience in cross-border corporate and transaction matters.

Andrew Ngun Cung Lian, educated in the US, will serve as the managing director of the office and will lead a team of five lawyers.

Experienced Myamnar litigation lawyer U Kyaw Hoe, who is a member of the National League for Democracy (NLD) party’s central committee, will head the office’s litigation practice. The firm also plans to open a satellite office in Nay Pyi Taw, the national capital.

Burmese Army Troops Seize Rice Sacks for Kachin IDPs

250 sacks of rice donated by local NGO Karuna and other individuals were seized by Burmese army troops at Kawng Ja village. Catholic ministers from Mung Hkawng village tried to persuade Burmese army’s tactical commander Colonel Myit Naing Oo to return those seized rice sacks for internally displaced persons (IDPs), but he turned down their request, said an NGO worker. Catholic ministers say they will make another attempt to get rice sacks back to local NGO.

Hundreds of local villagers continue to flee their homes for fear of being arrested and tortured by government troops. Local sources say about 500 Mungding Pa villagers are heading to Tan Tadar and Hanhtet village today at about 2 pm.

KLN sources say Burmese army troops show no signs of retreating from Mungding Pa and surrounding villages. Some troops led by tactical commander have moved from Mungding Pa to Nam Hpu village.

Skirmishes continue between KIA’s 12th Battalion troops and a Burmese army column at Nam Hpu village early today morning.
