Authorities in a town slated for a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in southern Burma have confiscated paddy fields ready for harvest to make way for civilian housing quarters, according to a local activist group.

An activist from Dawei Human Rights Watch said a nearly 200-strong team led by district and township administrators showed up on Sunday morning at the rice plots in the Sanchi quarter of western Dawei Township, where they proceeded to fence off 14 acres of rice paddies. The land grab evicted more than 20 people working and living out on the fields.

Myanmar’s Parliament will review human rights commission bill by the end of this month,

Myanmar’s Parliament will review human rights commission bill by the end of this month, according to Director Aung Myo Min from Department of Human Rights Education.

The bill was harshly criticized by civil organizations for not meeting international standards.

Civil organizations met with MPs in Nay Pyi Taw to discuss the bill and key facts pointed out by the MPs will be discussed at the parliament, he added.

“We met with 60 MPs in Nay Pyi Taw. We accepted the key facts they pointed out. Eight MPs signed up to discuss the bill at the parliament. But the bill is not so badly created though it did not meet international standards. It would be better if added with public voices,” he said.

According to the bill, the proportion of government-appointed members in the commission’s member selection board is very high, allowing only one member to participate in the board from non-government organizations.

According to the draft bill, the commission can inspect a local prison on a condition that it must acquire permission to do so in advance. The civil organizations pointed out there are less chance to make a successful investigation on that condition as the prison officials can make prearrangements to hide the truth.

The bill said the commission can request any required information from government departments on a condition that it has no right to acquire information if the departments says it’s confidential.

The civil organizations pointed out that it’s in opposition to Paris Principle, the first International Workshop on National Institutions for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights held in Paris.

The state-owned media revealed the content of the bill bill on July 7 this year.

Kachin ethnic party to make alliance with opposition NLD

The Kachin State National Congress for Democracy (KNCD) will form an alliance with Myanmar’s key opposition party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), Sisi Nawger,  secretary of KNCD party, told Eleven Media.

“KNCD will ally with NLD as the same way we did in 1990. We haven’t complete the legal formalities for the alliance. But we usually meet with NLD members in Myitkyina Township. As we have the same aims with NLD, negotiation can be easy,” said Sisi Nawger.

The KNCD is headquartered in Myitkyina Township, Kachin State in northern Myanmar. Founded in 1949, it won the largest and second largest votes in their region in 1952, 1956 and 1990 elections.

The ethnic party along with all other members of United Nationalities Alliance_ a coalition of ethnic political parties_ did not participate in 2010 Election.

“In 2010, both Daw Suu [Aung San Suu Kyi, chairperson of NLD] and UNA’s chairperson Khun Tun Oo were under arrest. So, the ethnic parties did not participate in the election. Now that the ethnic parties are allowed to register, we might enter alliance with the NLD,” said Sisi Nawger.

The party registration of KNCD was approved on October 22. Party campaigns will be launched soon, said Sisi Nawger.

The Arachneed Journal invites scholarly papers, commentaries, book reviews, interviews, multi media presentation (audio visual) for its upcoming issue.

This issue focusses on “Freedom” as the broad theme. Thus contributions are invited from scholars, activists, professionals engaged in diverse streams of humanities and social sciences and allied arts. We strongly encourage young and emerging scholars to submit their manuscripts for review, focussing on the above mentioned theme or an allied area. The central concern of the publication with regards to this issue is to present the readers with different approaches,perspectives and categorizations through which the idea of Freedom can be deliberated upon, and thus not just through text but through several diverse mediums.
