Three suspects allegedly involved in recent bomb blasts and attempted bombings in Yangon, Mandalay and Taungoo have been detained for questioning, according to concerned officials and official reports.

Time bomb blasts in Yangon Region were said to have been conducted by groups, but police managed to arrest a key alleged suspect in Mon State yesterday morning.

In connection with a series of bombings in Yangon Region, police arrested the suspect on his motorbike on Belin-Natgyi-Phapun Road in Mon State at 7:30 a.m. yesterday, said Police Lt-Col Win Ko, deputy chief of Mon State Police Force.

The suspect is 27-year old Saw Myint Lwin, who lives in Phapun Township, according to his National Registration Card. Among the bombings he is said to have planned or conducted was the bomb blast in Room 921 at Traders Hotel on Monday night.

“At 1:30 a.m. on October 15, the Special Branch sent us a photo and evidence of the suspect involved in the bomb blast and instructed us to pursue him immediately. According to the Yangon Region and Mon State police forces that carried out the search operation, the suspect came to Mon State from Yangon Region by car. The suspect was arrested on his way to Belin from Phapun as he drove his motorbike. We immediately handed over the suspect to Yangon Region Police Force,” said Police Lt-Col Win Ko.

Bomb plots outside Yangon keep police busy

On October 9, a mine wrapped in a polyethylene bag was discovered in a bus travelling from Nyaunglaybin to Phyu in Bago Region. The next day, a bomb blast occurred at Chanmyae Guest House in Bago Town. In connection with the incident, police have already identified a suspect, Saw Tun Tun, but are still in pursuit of him, Myanmar Radio and Television said yesterday.

Meanwhile, police are questioning two suspects in connection with a bomb discovered at Shwebei Restaurant at the corner of 80th Street and 16th Street in Aungmyaethazan Township in Mandalay Region, said Police Lt-Col Zaw Min Oo, head of Mandalay Police Force.

At the restaurant, waiters asked two customers who were leaving if they had left a black bag behind, but they refused to accept it and left the premises. The black bag was found to contain an American-made M-67 bomb with six AA batteries and a table clock. The waiters kept the black bag at the restaurant while informing the authorities. Later, the two customers who had denied knowing about the bag were seen on CCTV footage holding the bag before they left. They sat at table Number 14 upstairs, and the bag was found under their table. The police found these two suspects at Taungthamaninn in the evening of the same day and detained them for questioning, said Police Lt-Col Zaw Min Oo.

Those detained for questioning are Aung Aung (a) Mohamad Hsarli, 38, and Chin Su Yin, a Chinese Malaysian citizen. Both are Buddhists, police said.

General public the victim in seemingly random incidents

Bomb blasts and bomb discoveries have occurred at busy places in Yangon Region during the past few days.
At about 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, a bomb exploded at the bus stand in front of the Sawbwargyigon highway bus terminal in Insein Township, Yangon. Another, undetonated bomb was found near the scene.

Another bomb blast occurred in Tharkayta Township on Sunday evening, leaving two 14-year-old boys injured.
The blast occurred when the boys, Htet Aung Naing and Win Min Htwe, tried to open a black package they found near a truck parked by the roadside that day.

On Monday morning, an unexploded time bomb was also found under table Number 19 at the Western Park Ruby Restaurant in Ahlon Township, Yangon Region. Then, at about 11:30 p.m. that night, a bomb exploded in the bathroom of room Number 921 of Traders Hotel in Yangon, injuring an American female.

Public urged to maintain high “security awareness” despite fears

In connection with this series of bomb blasts, authorities are carrying out search operation in and around the bomb blast scenes and four suspects are under investigation, Police Major Myint Htwe of Yangon Region Police Force said yesterday morning.

The police officer added that the culprits could be exposed soon. According to the investigations, the bomb blasts were carried out by groups. He had already received evidence regarding the suspects.

According to police, the Traders bomb blast happened in the bathroom when the American citizen opened a bag just before taking a shower. She was sent to the emergency unit of Yangon General Hospital (YGH) within ten minutes of the blast and is now in stable condition and later transferred to Bangkok General Hospital, Police Lt-Col Win Kyi, head of Yangon West District Police Force, said yesterday morning.

Police Lt-Col Win Kyi urged the public to remain on high alert and have security awareness, despite their fears.
“They also need to inform the authorities in a timely manner whenever they see a suspect bag. The bomb blasts that occurred in Taungoo, Tharkayta and Traders Hotel happened because of someone opening a suspect bag. For that reason, the people should inform the authorities as soon as possible whenever they see something suspicious,” he said. “The people are in a state of panic now, due to continued bomb blasts and discoveries of unexploded bombs in Yangon Region. The police have been kept busy with search operations during these days, and they have received much information from the people.”
