Labour Ministry to create jobs for ex-child soldiers

EMG:   The Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security will create jobs for children who were recruited by the military but have been discharged from military service, according to a government official.

“We are going to create job opportunities for such children in the factories. Otherwise, if they want to run their own business, we will conduct vocational training courses and give them some money to invest in their business,” said an official from the Ministry.

A total of 105 children, recruited by the military between last year and this year, have been handed over to their families. Most of them are from Yangon, Mandalay and Bago Regions.

At present, the ministry is joining other departments to combat forced child labour and the recruitment of child soldiers by 2015.

The ministry is now cooperating with the Ministry of Defence and the Human Trafficking Combating Team in the discharging of child soldiers.

In 2007, Myanmar signed an agreement with the International Labour Organization to combat forced labour.

Myanmar-Burma to adopt metric system

emg

Myanmar is preparing to adopt the metric system or the International System of Units (SI System) as the country’s official system of measurement, according to the Ministry of Commerce.

One of the reasons is to streamline the weight measuring process in exporting agricultural products such as rice, beans and maize for which various measurement systems have been widely applied, according to Dr. Pwint San, Deputy Minister for Commerce.

“In exporting rice and other agri-products, kilograms is the common measurement unit, but Myanmar has used FPS (foot-pound-second) and CGS (centimetre-gram-second) Systems in measuring goods. Therefore, initiatives will need to be launched to replace them with the SI System, and to achieve the widespread use of metric units among farmers, sellers and the whole country at large,” said Dr. Pwint San.

The deputy minister discussed the subject in parliament after MP Aye Naing of Sinbaowel Constituency asked for legislating on measurement units according to international standards.

“Weight and other measurements as well as quality indices to be legislated under the law for standards should lead to a position convenient for international trading. Now there are opportunities for Myanmar to trade with European countries and the United States, and so the standards used in our country should match with those used in the others,” he added.

The deputy minister also pointed out the clumsiness of using different measurement systems. Unnecessary costs and delays also occur when weights have to be re-measured, and goods have to be re-packaged; especially when trading with countries who do not accept certain measurements.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Science and Technology has been tasked with announcing the metric system as the official measurement system of Myanmar.

EMG10.OCTOBER 2013

The government has issued a storm warning in Myeik district, with officials warning fishing boats out at sea to take cover in nearby islands, sources say.

In weather reports yesterday, a small storm brewing in the Andaman Sea recorded wind speeds of between 40 to 50 mph. The seas will be rough and the tides high between October 7 and 11, so those at sea need to use caution, said meteorologist Tun Lwin.

“I have been contacting some of the outer islands about weather conditions since yesterday, and I have instructed authorities to inform fishing boats about the storm. Some fishing boats have returned and others are taking cover in nearby islands,” Myeik district governor Thein Win said yesterday.

The storm is moving north, far from the coast, and is expected to turn northwest. Locals from Tanintaryi, Mon and delta areas need to be wary of vicious waves and strong winds, officials say. The tide is up by between about 7 and 10 feet, according to weather reports.

“The fishing season has begun and squid fishing boats are out in the sea. Half of them are already out there,” a squid fishing boat owner said.

Thailand, Myanmar agree on bilateral meeting

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Oct 10 – Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and Myanmar President Thein Sein agreed to a bilateral meeting for further cooperation of both countries.
 13813895778260-640x390x2
At a sildeline meeting during the 23rd ASEAN Summit and other related summits on October 9-10 held in Brunei Darussalam, Thai Government Spokesman Teerat Ratanasevi said of the meeting’s result that both countries agreed upon opening their mutual border to increase and develop trade as well as visits among the peoples, particularly at Myawaddy and Tha Chi Lek.
Thailand proposed Myanmar to apply a ‘national single window’ measure to prevent goods smuggling through the borders, causing both countries loss of benefits from tax collection. Thailand is ready to support the technology and provide knowledge to Myanmar in such matters.
Prime Minister Yingluck also asked President Thein Sein to give importance to the Dawei deep-sea port development project, for it is an investment project that will create connectivity within the region. Both leaders agreed that Thailand and Myanmar should search for interested investors from other countries to invest in the project while waiting for other investment decisions.
Mr Teerat said the Thai premier asked the Myanmar president to consider the development of Trilateral Highway which will connect land transportation of three countries — India, Myanmar and Thailand — and that Myanmar agreed with the idea.
Thailand and Myanmar will meet with the Indian prime minister at the next ASEAN+3 meeting to discuss developing such a highway. (MCOT online news)
