Sitagu Missionary Group and MAI airline will cooperate in providing assistance to Myanmar migrant workers in Malaysia who want to return home, Dr. Myat Thu told The Daily Eleven.

Myanmar Airways International (MAI) is planning to fly free of charge for the migrant workers in Malaysia and Sitagu Group is also planning to assist with the money they got from the donors which will be enough to hire three chartered planes.

“Sitagu Monk has received a donation about US$128,000 at present. There will be more than 170 people on board for one flight. The cost is about US$40,000 per flight, excluding ticket fares so we have enough money for three flights,” said Dr. Myat Thu who is treasurer of Sitagu Missionary Group of Myanmar.

Representatives of Sitagu Missionary Group of Myanmar will go to Malaysia on September 9 and they will carry out first flight on September 13.

“We will give priority to the workers who are in trouble at Malaysia. Ill people, pregnant women, those who have children and women are the main concerned for us to bring back. The Monk wanted to arrange to bring back them since the crackdown on illegal migrant workers in Malaysia started at the end of last month,” the treasurer continued.

Sitagu Monk will welcome in person the workers who are in first flight at Yangon airport. Hundred of Myanmar migrate workers are coming back home because Malaysia started a special operation on September 1 to arrest illegal migrant workers. In Malaysia, most migrate workers come from Indonesia and Myanmar. About 70,000 Myanmar migrant workers are working in Malaysia, and many of them are staying illegally.

Myanmar will find it difficult to accomplish the peace process without a federal system, says Union Parliament speaker.

Speaker Thura Shwe Mann made the comment during a meeting with local people in Taunggyi, Shan state, on Monday.

“In the matter of reviewing the constitution, it is good to have coordination between Parliament speakers. We will have difficulty in achieving peace if we fail to adopt a federal system, the very issue of the country. There will also be difficulties in national unity, national consolidation and the rule of law. These points are somewhat right so we will make a review. The public participation is also required. Don’t leave it to parliament alone. A nation needs only a single military to defend itself. The United States has only one armed forces. We can no way establish armed forces in every region and state,” said Shwe Mann.

During the meeting, the chief minister of Shan State explained developments in the state.

Also present on the occasion were high-ranking officials from the military, central and regional governments, regional parliament speaker, parliamentarians and officials from the self-administered zone (Pao-Danu) and local authorities.

Myanmar navy boat found weapons on a fishing boat between Pahtaw Island and Myeik in southern Myanmar on Sunday night.

The fishing boat, Kaung Myat Hinn Thar, was carrying 15 fishermen along with an AK-47, two magazines and 21 bullets.

“Twelve Myanmar fishermen were on the boat and three Bengalis were found in the engine room. Weapons were found on the boat and it was headed for Bangladesh according to the preliminary investigation. They said they had planned to transport the people from Bangladesh to Thailand,” said an official who requested not to be named.

The navy found the three Bengalis hiding in the engine room with the weapons after they became suspicious of the boat registration license, which has already expired in April and contained incorrect information.
