Working Conditions in Thailand’s Fishing Sector reveals evidence of forced labour, debt bondage and violence-VIDEO

THE International Labour Organization (ILO) report Employment Practices and Working Conditions in Thailand’s Fishing Sector reveals evidence of forced labour, debt bondage and violence.

Featuring interviews with 596 fishermen, the majority of whom are migrants from Myanmar and Cambodia, it exposes abuse onboard fishing boats, with 17.3 per cent of the fishers questioned testifying that they had been threatened by their employer, the captain, a supervisor or a co-worker and 101 of the respondents (approximately 17 per cent) recounting that they had worked against their will, unable to leave for a variety of reasons.

The Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) report Sold to the Sea documented severe human rights infringements, human trafficking, physical violence, forced detention and even murder in the Thai fishing industry, with testimonies from Burmese workers as young as 16 offering details of the systemic abuse. The ILO report substantiates our conviction that human rights abuses are widespread in the fishing industry, both in Thailand and elsewhere. The uncomfortable truth is that fish caught on such vessels has been tracked through international supply chains to the European and US Seafood markets. Fish caught by these modern-day slaves is reaching our own plates.

EJF is working with local activists, responsible companies, the European Commission and the US Department of State’s Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons in order to uncover abuses and their links to international supply chains, and to highlight these issues to decision-makers who can bring about change.

The same lack of monitoring, transparency and traceability that facilitates unscrupulous fishing operators to used trafficked workers and abuse their crews enables illegal fishing activities to take place, such as stealing from coastal countries, damaging marine environments and jeopardising the future health of fish stocks and biodiversity. EJF is working to both defend human rights and protect the environment by combating illegal fishing and human trafficking.

Vijay Nambiar: Rakhine Conflict Is Just a Domestic Affair

United Nation Secretary General’s special advisor on Myanmar Mr. Vijay Nambiar says that the  conflict that had broken out in Rakhine State is a domestic issue that is to be settled in Myanmar and no other country needs to interfere the internal affairs.

He said so at the meeting with the state government during his visit to Rakhine State on 1 September 2013.

“When some of the international communities have hinted at stepping in to help in coping with the conflict in Myanmar, some organizations like OIC are trying to interfere it. As a matter of fact, this conflict is just a internal affair that is to be resolved between two communities just in Myanmar. We don’t like that any other foreign government will intervene this affair,” he said.

Mr. Vijay Nambia arrived in Rakhine State on 1 September and visited Rakhine refugee camps and Bengali refugee camps in Maungdaw Township and Pauktaw Township and Bengali refugee camp in Sittwe Township, it is learnt.

There are some of international and domestic media fuelling the affairs concerning Rakhine’s conflict, he said in discussing the affairs of Rakhine State with the state government in the morning on 1 September.

“To be worse, some of global and internal media are inflaming the conflict. We’ve seen that there is a growing public discontents between two communities instead of reducing them. International communities understand that communal conflict may change into religious problem if some of international organizations intervene the conflict providing that the problem in Rakhine State is getting worse and worse,” he said.

Moreover, if there may be Myanmar’s affair in the conference of United Nations, reform process may change into something, he pointed. Continue reading “Vijay Nambiar: Rakhine Conflict Is Just a Domestic Affair”

DASSK unable to attend UNFC-Government political dialogue

According to Pa Doh Mahn Mahn, Secretary of the United Nationalities Federal Council (UNFC), chairwoman of the National League for Democracy (NLD) party Daw Aung Suu Kyi will not be able to attend upcoming political dialogues between the UNFC and the national government’s Myanmar Peace Center, due to schedule conflicts with her trip to Europe.

The meeting will be held September 8 in Chaing Mai, Thailand, and marks the second time UNFC representatives have met with the government’s Union Peace Working Committee (UPWC) to collaborate towards multi-party peace agreements. The first meeting took place in February this year.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was invited to participate as a third-party observer of the meeting, along with other non-UNFC political organs like the Nationalities Brotherhood Federation (NBF), the United Nationalities Alliance (UNA), the Arakan Liberation Party (ALP) and the Restoration Council of Shan State/Shan State Army (RCSS/SSA).

Of the 4 mentioned, the UNA is the only group which has confirmed it will send delegates.

According to Mahn Mahn, the UNFC intends to stand resolutely behind its outline of demands during the talks. “As discussed before with the government’s technical group, the UNFC will continue to promote the agenda of its six-point road map for peace,” he said.

The September 8 meeting will be led by UNFC General Secretary Nai Hantha and 10 delegates from UNFC parties.
