Myanmar and Belgium will share the costs for a six-month feasibility study on producing hydropower from the Ayeyarwady River after it has been maintained.
“Belgium and Myanmar will share the costs of 800,000 euros equally for a six-month study on four areas of the Ayeyarwady River.
EIA and SIA will be made after the study has been conducted,” said an official from the Directorate of Water Resources and Improvement of River Systems under the Ministry of Transport.
The review of the three-month feasibility conducted from March to June will be submitted to the Ministry of Transport within this month, he said. The study will be conducted until the end of October, according to Aye Thaung Lwin, director of the directorate.
The directorate is cooperating with Belgium-based SBE Consulting Engineers group to building sluice gates along the river near Yanapo village, Chauk, Minhla, and Aung La.
Each sluice gate can be equipped with six to eight turbines and is expected to produce 180 to 240 megawatts, according to the directorate.
Currently there are 46 constricted points in waterway along the Ayeyarwady River and 37 constricted points along Chindwin River. River bed maintenance and river management have been conducted at these constricted points and the directorate is now undertaking surface-level maintenance, said Tun Lwin Oo, the director-general of the directorate.
