2013 International Labor Rights Award goes to Burmese Migrant Workers Rights Network (MWRN)

Washington, D.C. – The International Labor Rights Forum (ILRF) will honor the Burmese Migrant Workers Rights Network (MWRN) and the State Enterprises Workers’ Relations Federation (SERC) with the 2013 International Labor Rights Award for their groundbreaking work in defending migrant workers in Thailand. The ILRF’s International Labor Rights Award is given annually to recognize the significant contributions of labor rights advocates toward achieving just and humane treatment for workers worldwide.

Migrant workers from the neighboring countries of Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos make up an estimated 10 percent of Thailand’s labor force, particularly in labor intensive export industries like seafood processing, agriculture, garment manufacturing, construction and domestic care. Many of these workers are trafficked into the country by labor brokers and are often subjected to labor exploitation. Horrible working conditions, including under and non-payment of wages, violations of minimum wage laws, long overtime hours, dangerous and unsanitary work environments and the denial of freedom of association and collective bargaining rights are common. Worse still, instances of debt bondage, forced labor and child labor are known to be widespread in these industries.
In 2009 migrant workers from Myanmar employed in Thailand’s seafood processing sector formed MWRN to address issues relating to human trafficking, forced labor, child labor, and other labor rights violations. With assistance from Mr. Sawit Kaevwarn, ILRF award recipient and the Secretary General of SERC, Mr. Aung Kyaw, ILRF award recipient and the President of MWRN, has grown MWRN into the largest grassroots member-based migrant worker association in Thailand.
Over the last three years, MWRN has courageously exposed labor rights violations at seafood processing facilities producing for the largest U.S. retailers, welcomed noble peace prize recipient Aung San Suu Kyi on her first overseas trip in 24 years to Mahachai, Samutsakorn Province in Thailand, and advocated for major reforms to Thailand’s immigration laws.
Although migrant workers cannot legally form a union in Thailand, the collaboration between SERC and MWRN has helped bridge the gap between the traditional union movement in Thailand and the struggles of migrant workers. SERC and MWRN have successfully established a “Humanitarian Transportation Project” to enable Myanmar migrant workers to visit their hometowns securely with the Cooperation of Transport Co, Ltd. Furthermore, SERC under the leadership of Mr. Kaevwarn has filed a petition with the International Labour Organization alleging that the denial of work accident compensation to migrant workers by the Government of Thailand is a clear breach of ILO Convention 19.
“MWRN is on its way to becoming a globally recognized representative of migrant workers on issues relating to trafficking, forced labor and other labor rights abuses in Thailand,” said Judy Gearhart, Executive Director of ILRF. “We are committed to standing with MWRN and supporting the organizations work in the future.”

INDONESIA: Police Arrest Alleged Myanmar Embassy Bombing Plot Mastermind

The National Police anti-terror unit Densus 88 arrested late on Wednesday a man believed to be the mastermind behind the Myanmar embassy bombing plot.

“Sigit [Indrajit], who allegedly planned the Myanmar embassy bombing, was arrested at around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday in Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta,” National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Boy Rafli Amar said on Thursday.

Two other suspects in the bomb plot, Sefa and Achmad Taufiq, were arrested on May 2 while they were traveling by motorbike in a busy residential area in South Jakarta with five assembled pipe bombs. They allegedly wanted to exact revenge on the Myanmar government for its treatment of the country’s Rohingya Muslim population.

Police claimed that they were able to thwart the bombing plan because they had been monitoring Sigit’s moves. Police subsequently raided Sigit’s house in Pamulang, South Tangerang, but he had already fled.

Meanwhile, police also arrested a terrorism suspect identified as Rohadi at 2:40 a.m. on Thursday morning in his house in Tangerang. It was not clear if he was connected to the Myanmar Embassy bomb plot.

“An anti-bomb squad searched his house and found one kilogram of fertilizer, sulphur, black powder, glue gun, cable, potassium chlorate and an iron pipe with a diameter of 1.5 inches,” Boy said.

Suu Kyi :China should discuss Myitsone issue only with president

22.may 2013 emg

Myanmar’s opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi told China to deal directly with the government if they wish to resume the controversial Myitsone project.

Suu Kyi, chairperson of the National League for Democracy (NLD) and Lower House MP, conveyed the message during a meeting with the media held in Parliament in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.

Eleven Media Group reporters asked Suu Kyi about her comments as Chinese embassy officials have frequently demanded the resumption of the Myitsone dam project in Kachin State in meeting with the NLD members.

“What I want to say is that the Myitsone issue should be put forward to President Thein Sein only. I don’t know why the Chinese government officials have asked us.” Suu Kyi said.

President Thein Sein announced the suspension of the project, which was being built on the Ayeyawady River near Tanphe village, about 7 kilometers downstream of the confluence, in September 2011.

He sent a message to Parliament in September 30, 2011, saying the Myitsone dam project would be suspended during his presidency on grounds of social and environmental impacts.

The NLD leader also told the reporters that she would submit a proposal to the constitution amendment commission for making some amendments to the constitution.

When it comes to the ethnic issue, Suu Kyi highlighted more transparency in the peace process between the government and ethnic armed groups. She also pointed out the weakening judiciary sector due to the interference by the executive sector.

Wa will not budge from Thai border areas

The United Wa State Army (UWSA) and the people it had brought down from the Sino-Burmese border will not move house back from the Thai-Burmese border areas where it has been allowed to reside since the 1990s, according to well known analyst Aung Kyaw Zaw, who is reportedly close to the Wa.

“This land has been won by blood, sweat and tears of the Wa people and its fighters,” he said. “They refuse to forsake it under any pressure.”

The UWSA for 7 long years waged an all-out war against the Mong Tai Army (MTA) led by the late Khun Sa (1926-2007) until a mutiny broke the backbone of his forces and forced him to make peace with Rangoon in 1996. Continue reading “Wa will not budge from Thai border areas”
