Vice-President Dr Sai Mauk Kham and party attended the 10th Anniversary Celebration of the United Nations Day of Vesak (Fullmoon Day of Kason) at the UN Office in Bangkok this morning.
The Vice-President and party paid homage to members of the Sangha led by Sayadaw Somdet Phra, Chairman of the International Council for the United Nations Day of Vesak, at the VIP room of the UN Office building.
It was also attended by Rector Sayadaw of Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University Dr. Phra Brahmapundit and members of the Sangha, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Education of Thailand, ministers from Buddhist countries and guests.
First, the Rector Sayadaw of Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University explained the theme of this year’s United Nations Day of Vesak, “Education and Global Citizenship: A Buddhist Perspective”.
Next, the Chairman Sayadaw spoke on the occasion.
Then, the Rector Sayadaw gave an account of the ceremony. Thai Deputy Prime Minister Minister for Education Mr. Pongthep Thepkanchana delivered an address and read out the messages sent by the world leaders.
Next, the Vice – President paid homage to Sitagu Sayadaw Bhaddanta Nyanissara and monks from other countries.
In the afternoon session, Royal Consort to the Crown Prince of Thailand HRH Princess Srirasm made a speech.
The ceremony which has been held annually since 2004 continues tomorrow. In the evening, the Vice-President met mission staff and their families at the residence of Myanmar Ambassador to Thailand U Tin Win and attended a dinner hosted by the family of Myanmar Ambassador.
