Foreign tourists will soon be permitted to enter Myanmar through border trade centers in Kayin State, bordering Thailand, said Zaw Min, the chief minister for the state at the ASEAN Economic Forum held on May 19 in Hpa-an, its capital city.
“As a preparation for the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015, the foreign tourists will be allowed to enter the country through the newly opened border trade centers such as Mawtaung, Hteekhee, Myawady and Pharathonesu in the state,” he said.
Currently there are few foreign tourists who entered the country through the centers and only one-day trip is allowed.
“There is a bridge built across Thaung Rin River between Myanmar and Thailand. As much as I know, the number of foreign tourists entering the country through the border is not much now.
But opening like this will likely attract more of them. And Thailand has received a lot of tourists currently. The tourists are also interested in visiting Kayin,” said a Myanmar resident from Maesot, a town in western Thailand.

Buddha statues have been stolen at Bagan ancient cultural heritage zone during the month of May, it is reported.
A wooden Buddha statue at the eastern part of Myasigon temple in ancient cultural zone has been stolen on May 19, it is reported.
“I came to know about the stolen statues on the evening of May 19 when I visited the temple. It is a locked statue about four feet from the head to the feet. They (the thieves) stole the statue by breaking the part of the feet,” a monk called U Kinsana who resided at the Myasigon said.
Although they don’t know exactly about the era that the statue was made, it was over 20 years that it was conveyed at the pagoda, the monk said.
Bagan Police has visited the scene and seized some materials the thieves had left.
Similarly, a stone Buddha statue about 18 inches high was stolen on May 10. Likewise, about 30- inch- stone Buddha statue and another stone Buddha statue were stolen, it is reported.

The government has been trying to sign a final contract with China to start a railway project extending between the western and eastern regions of Myanmar without releasing any information to the public, reports say.
Officials from Myanmar and China signed a memorandum of understanding for railway project connecting Kyaukphyu, Rakhine State and Muse, Shan State two years ago and they are now trying to sign a memorandum of agreement in the near future. Details about the project have not been released yet.
“Chinese Ambassador Mr Yang Houlan visited Maday Island yesterday (May 19) and met with the local residents. I don’t exactly know the reason for his visit. When we asked the Chinese ambassador whether there are railway and motorway projects in Maday Island, he didn’t give a direct answer and said he didn’t know. The Chinese ambassador himself didn’t give an official disclosure about whether there is a railway project or not. We, the local residents, don’t get to know anything about the Kyaukphyu-Muse railway project,” said Tun Kyi, a local resident from Kyaukphyu.
Local residents from Kyuakphyu also say that they were not informed about the oil and natural gas pipeline project and they only found out after the project started.
The residents say they will not accept any projects including the new railway and motorway projects that lack transparency and public notifications.
“The gas pipeline and Kyaukphyu deep seaport projects are nearly completed. The local residents are now suffering from the disadvantages of the gas pipeline project, but the authorities and respective companies continued to work [on the project]. When the locals protested to show their dissatisfaction, they get sued. Such kinds of things are still happening in this time,” said Snow from Myanmar-China Pipeline Watch Committee.
“Even though the government kept saying to have transparency, [they] haven’t done anything about it in reality. We accept the investment arriving to Rakhine State, but we only have the locals to benefit from these projects. Now, only a group of people receive the benefits but the locals don’t receive any benefits. Instead, they have to face the consequences of the projects. As [they] still haven’t solved the compensation issues of the local residents, they shouldn’t work on the railway project now. So, I want to tell those who will make the decisions about the project to make the decisions after cooperating with the local residents,” she added.
The railway project is 868.262 kilometers long (539.19 miles) and will pass through Kyaukphyu, Ahn, Mandalay, Lashio, and Muse.
The project includes 79 train stations, 409 bridges, and 101 tunnels and will also connect with Kunming, Yunnan province in southern China. It will be built with full investment from China.

BURMA DEMOCRATIC CONCERN BDC :
Burma’s Military Commander in Chief, General Min Aung Hlaing, said “Burmese military should avoid any action which can be misunderstood”.
We would like to welcome it. We would like to see mutual understanding, mutual trust and mutual respect between Burmese military and the public. Especially, we would like to see transparent and significant actions taken by the Burmese military working on reform process. We would like to see inclusive dialogue whereas all the Burma’s stake holders include such as Burmese democratic groups, Burmese ethnic groups, Burmese reform groups as well as Burmese military so as to find the common solution for the betterment of Burma.
President U Thein Sein reaffirms again that Burmese military plays important role in Burma’s political process. We wanted to see provable action of Burmese military to say that they are sincere and they are genuinely seeking democratic change in Burma. One obvious indicator could be the regular press conferences of Burmese military public relation offices informing the public of the steps they have taken, they will be taken and they had taken. Especially, Burmese military should explain their planned strategy how they will gradually reduce and remove their 25% seats occupants in the parliament.
We also wanted to see how Burmese military will help finding solution in regard to economic militarization of Burma through Union of Myanmar Economic Holding Limited (UMEHL) and Myanmar Economic Cooperation (MEC). In this way, Burmese military and public can gradually build mutual trust, mutual understanding and mutual respect.
