Myanmar government has formed a watch team monitor the ministries’ investment projects

Myanmar government has formed a watch team with representatives from various ministries to monitor the ministries’ investment projects, the Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development announced in its website.

The newly formed ‘Investment Assessment Response Team’ will conduct necessary assessments when the businessmen who will implement the ministries’ projects submit the investment proposal to the Myanmar Investment Commission.

The team will need to report their assessments to the Myanmar Investment Commission. It is also responsible to inform the public about the projects.

“If a ministry has a business project which will be implemented by a local or foreign company, then our team will have to carry out assessments and report them to the Myanmar Investment Commission,” an official from the Ministry of Livestock and Fishery, who is also a member of Investment Assessment Response Team, said.

Investment Assessment Response Team is comprised of representatives from 21 ministries including the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Mining, Ministry of Livestock and Fishery, Ministry of Communication, Ministry of Post and Telecommunication, Ministry of Forestry, and Ministry of Electrical Power.

DASSK: Myanmar’s military-drafted 2008 constitution are likely to be pushed through before the 2015 general election,

YANGON – Amendments to Myanmar’s military-drafted 2008 constitution are likely to be pushed through before the 2015 general election, democracy champion Aung San Suu Kyi said on Friday.

“We will try to amend the constitution before 2015 and we hope we can do it,” Suu Kyi told a news conference.

The Nobel Peace Prize laureate, who spent 15 years under house arrest between 1989 to 2010, became a member of parliament after she and her National League for Democracy (NLD) party won 43 out of 45 contested seats in a byelection in April, 2012.

Suu Kyi has cultivated close working relationships with Predident Thein Sein and Lower House speaker Shwe Mann, deemed the two most powerful figures in Myanmar’s still pro-military regime.

Thein Sein heads the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), which is packed with ex-military men and leads the government after winning the November 2010.

“I believe the ruling party, USDP, also wants to amend the constitution because the important issues to review the charter were submitted by senior members of USDP and were approved without any disagreement,” Suu Kyi said.

The most controversial clause in the 2008 constitution gives the military establishment the right to appoint 25% of the seats in parliament, enough to veto any laws deemed detrimental to the military’s long-established control over the country.

Myanmar was ruled by a military dictatorships between 1962 to 2010.

Suu Kyi acknowledged that amending the constitution would be “difficult”. Myanmar’s next general election is scheduled for 2015.

The current charter would exclude Suu Kyi, who was married to a British national, from contesting for the presidency.

WAR: Burma army goes to war against Shan on Sino-Burmese border

It is reported that today early morning Burma Army launched an attack against Shan bases on the Mao (Shweli) valley on the Sino-Burmese border, resulting in local people over 800 to flee for their safety across the border, said local news sources.

“We did not start the fight. Units of Burma army which are involved in today’s fighting are under the direct command of the Military Operations Command (MOC) #16 based in Namkham. They [Burma army units] are advancing towards areas under our control from 6 directions. Now the fight is still going on. We suffered one death. We have seen 11 Burma army soldiers dead bodies. Some of them have been captured alive by our troops,” said Shan State Army (SSA) Task Force commander Lt-Col Zawm Mong, speaking from the frontline.

At the time of this writing (11:00), 6 Burma Army soldiers are reportedly hospitalized at Namkham General Hospital. News have spread in the town that the hospital is in need of blood urgently, said a local from Namkham. It is also reported that Panhsay militia group is helping to transport the injured Burma Army soldiers.

2 militia groups: Panhsay militia and Namkham Myoma militia, led by U Law Sam are likely to help the Burma Army in fighting with the SSA, according to Kawli News report.

At dawn 4.00 am today, units of Burma army under the control of MOC #16, 400-strong, crossed the Mao (Ruili River) by boats to attack the SSA Task Force 701 base. The Burma Army also fired heavy weapons continuously from Manhawng crossing many of which landed in Chinese soil. The attack forced the people to flee for their safety in Chinese side.

Due to the fight between SSA and Burma army, people from Wan Tahur in Nawng Ma tract, Ho Hsai, Wan Kawn villages fled to Nawng Tao area in Chinese side, said Ai Yee Long, a chief administrator of village.

“In response to the fight between SSA and Burma army, China Army also reportedly has deployed its soldiers on their side, as refugees are fleeing to China. Most of the local people living on both sides of the border are Shan. They are currently taking refuge in their relatives’ homes,” reported local news sources.

The latest clashes broke out after 4 men from the military disguised as portrait photo sellers went missing in the fourth week of April, said some local people.

Restoration Council of Shan State/Shan State Army (RCSS/SSA) is one of the ethnic armed groups that signed ceasefire agreement with Myanmar government for peace talks in December 2011.

Mawtaung border trade camp commissioned into service

Mawtaung border trade camp of Taninthayi Region went into operation starting from yesterday morning.

At the opening of the border trade camp in Taninthayi Township, Region Chief Minister U Myat Ko said that thanks to the trade camp, trade

volume between Myanmar and Thailand would increase. Myeik-Taninthayi-Mawtaung Road would be upgraded for secure and

smooth transport thereby contributing to creating job opportunities in the region,he said.

Next, the Chief Minister and officials concerned observed the commodities

flow at the border trade camp.
