Copper mine implementation committee meets locals

CREDIT EMG

The committee that proble the Letpaduangtaung copper mine’s incident met with local residents in the Sarlingyi township of Sagaing Region yesterday.

The report, made by the probe commission led by opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, advocates continuing the project while calling for compensating fair amount for confiscated lands and reviewing the contract of Chinese-backed copper mine taking into consideration the best interest of the local residents.

“The local people are interested in the new contract. They want to see how the new contract will benefit them. The new contract is said to have been submitted to the Attorney General Office for its legal validity. Then, it will be submitted to the Myanmar Investment Commission and to the government of President [Thein Sein],” a local representative who attended the meeting said.

The copper mine project is a joint venture between military-owned Union of Myanmar Economic Holdings Ltd. and China-based Wanbao Company. The villagers staged protests last year as their farms and lands were confiscated for the project.

In November, the sit-in protestors at the project area were cracked down by the police using bombs containing phosphorous, for which there were widespread criticisms from the local and international communities.

The local who attended the yesterday’s meeting said, “The officials explained that the development of a country cannot rely only on agriculture, but it needs to extract metals. It is not an easy matter to invest billion of US dollars or thousand of billion kyats on a mining project, and so mining projects will be cooperated not only with China but also with other countries, they said.”

After the meeting, the officials also made separate discussions with respective villages for their education, health and development.

About 6,000 refugees remain in Meikhtila shelters, according to sources.

daily-785-13-tdl01

The communal violence that broke out on March 20 in Meikhtila left about 10,000 people homeless. At the end of April, rehabilitation works has begun for the homeowners.

“The Red Cross is still providing 25,000 liters of drinking water. It is assisting in the basic needs for the victims at the shelters,” the district officer Nay Oo for Meikhtila Red Cross Association said.

“We have been living at the camp for over 40 days as our house was burnt down. We heard that a new housing will be built but nothing has come yet in reality. Whether it is a house or a hut, we don’t mind. We just want to live in our own place,” a victim who lives in the shelter said.

“We have made some arrangements for those whose houses were not burnt. We have relocated them to their homes. For those whose houses were burnt down in violence, we sent them to camps and shelters. The camps opened at schools have been now moved to government properties. Inngone camps will move to Wuntawpyi monastery. As the rainy season is on the way, there are not enough tents in the district. We are planning to build more tents. We, ‘88 generation Peace and Open Society, are also helping the victims,” Htain Min Khaing of the group said.

Shame on Human Rights Watch – Who finance you?

A delegation from Human Rights Watch was recently in Saudi Arabia. To investigate the mistreatment of women under Saudi Law? To campaign for the rights of homosexuals, subject to the death penalty in Saudi Arabia? To protest the lack of religious freedom in the Saudi Kingdom? To issue a report on Saudi political prisoners?

No, no, no, and no. The delegation arrived to raise money from wealthy Saudis by highlighting HRW’s demonization of Israel. An HRW spokesperson, Sarah Leah Whitson, highlighted HRW’s battles with “pro-Israel pressure groups in the US, the European Union and the United Nations.” (Was Ms. Whitson required to wear a burkha, or are exceptions made for visiting anti-Israel “human rights” activists”? Driving a car, no doubt, was out of the question.)

Apparently, Ms. Whitson found no time to criticize Saudi Arabia’s abysmal human rights record. But never fear, HRW “recently called on the Kingdom to do more to protect the human rights of domestic workers.

There is nothing wrong with a human rights organization worrying about maltreatment of domestic workers. But there is something wrong when a human rights organization goes to one of the worst countries in the world for human rights to raise money to wage lawfare against Israel, and says not a word during the trip about the status of human rights in that country. In fact, it’s a virtual certainty that everyone in Whitson’s audience employs domestic servants, giving her a perfect, untaken opportunity to boast about HRW’s work in improving the servants’ status. But Whitson wasn’t raising money for human rights, she was raising money for HRW’s propaganda campaign against Israel. Thai Prime Minister’s Office website hacked

BANGKOK, May 8 – The official website of Thailand’s Office of the Prime Minister was hacked today with the name and title of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra replaced with messages attacking the premier herself.

Impolite messages written in English were posted by anonymous hackers identifying themselves only as “Unlimited Hack Team!!!”.

As of press time, the website http://www.opm.go.th cannot be accessed.

13680037684124-640x390x2Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Minister Anudith Nakornthap dismissed the action as challenging the ministry’s move to close down any websites which posted what he termed as unfair online criticism of premier.

Suranand Vejjajiva, the prime minister’s secretary, said the ICT ministry has been asked to close the website server, while an investigation is underway to track down the hacker.

“Legal action must be taken against the wrongdoer(s) as the act is a breach of the Computer Act,” he said.

The hacking occurred a day after Prime Minister Yingluck said people have the right and freedom to criticise the government’s policies but untrue accusations are unacceptable and the ICT must take action.

A lawyer for Ms Yingluck filed a defamation suit against an influential daily newspaper cartoonist last week charging him — Chai Rachawat, the professional persona of Somchai Katunyutanan — for his Facebook post which allegedly caused damage to her reputation as the country’s leader.

His post apparently referred to the premier’s recent speech at a democracy forum in Mongolia where she denounced the 2006 coup toppling her brother former premier Thaksin. (MCOT online news)
