Shame on Human Rights Watch – Who finance you?

A delegation from Human Rights Watch was recently in Saudi Arabia. To investigate the mistreatment of women under Saudi Law? To campaign for the rights of homosexuals, subject to the death penalty in Saudi Arabia? To protest the lack of religious freedom in the Saudi Kingdom? To issue a report on Saudi political prisoners?

No, no, no, and no. The delegation arrived to raise money from wealthy Saudis by highlighting HRW’s demonization of Israel. An HRW spokesperson, Sarah Leah Whitson, highlighted HRW’s battles with “pro-Israel pressure groups in the US, the European Union and the United Nations.” (Was Ms. Whitson required to wear a burkha, or are exceptions made for visiting anti-Israel “human rights” activists”? Driving a car, no doubt, was out of the question.)

Hundreds of members of radical Islamic groups on Friday called for “jihad in Myanmar” during rallies in front of the Myanmar embassy in Menteng, Jakarta, to protest growing violence against Rohingya Muslims.

“It has been [going on for a] long [time], our brothers in Rohingya have been tortured by Myanmar military, Buddhist monks and Buddhist people in Myanmar. There is no other way for our Muslim brothers in Rohingya, we have to wage jihad,” said Islamic Defender Front (FPI) chairman Rizieq Shihab during a protest at Hotel Indonesia traffic circle.

The FPI, along hundreds of members of the Islamic People Forum (FUI), Jamaah Ansharut Tauhid, Islamic Reformist Movement (Garis), Indonesian Committee for World Muslim Solidarity (Kisdi), Islamic Preaching Council (DDII), Indonesian Muslim Brotherhood Movement (GPMI) and Taruna Muslim (Muslim Youth), marched to the heavily guarded Myanmar embassy on Friday, brandishing banners that read “we want to kill Myanmar Buddhists” and “stop genocide in Myanmar.”

Rizieq, shouting through a loudspeaker to whip up the crowd, called on all Indonesian people to wage jihad against violence in Rohingya.

“Let’s pray for the crime there,” Rizieq said. “We’re obliged to help. Those who can pray, please pray, send them food, clothes, drink and medicines. Those who can give their lives, let’s go there. We will do fund-raising to buy food, drink and weapon for our brothers there.” Continue reading “Deadly Jihad : WE WANT TO KILL MYANMAR,S BUDHIS!!”

15 Oakkan violence suspects nabbed

CREDIT EMG

Fifteen people suspected to have been involved in sectarian violence that occurred after a Muslim woman bumped into a Buddhist novice in the town of Oakkan in Yangon region on Monday have been arrested, police say.

The situation there was calm yesterday, said chief of Oakkan Township Police Force police major Myint Maung.

A 100-strong police force reportedly combed Panibin village of Oakkan at 1.30 pm yesterday to capture the 15 suspects. The police also confiscated 13 Gyingalis (pointed iron sticks used with catapults), one sword and two catapults during the arrests.

The vice chief of Yangon Region Police Force said severe action would be taken against them and more arrests would be made.

“This incident should not have that worsened. Some public members lack wisdom and education. If such incidents continue to happen, we will face more blames and criticisms from the international community. We will take punitive action against all those involved. The 15 suspects being detained are all Buddhists. According to sources available, we have to make more arrests,” lieutenant police colonel Thet Lwin said.

According to the local police force (in Oakkan), both urban and rural areas in Oakkan township have seen no more violence and riots but strict security measures are still there.
Nine people were injured in the riots and out of them, three with serious injuries were sent to Yangon General Hospital.

Among the three in serious condition, one patient named Zaw Zaw Naing reportedly died in hospital yesterday afternoon.

The violence destroyed 81 homes, one mosque, one school and about 50 shops, Yangon Region Police Force reported.

The police said more security forces and military troops have been deployed in Oakkan to contain further violence.

Myanmar / Rakhine Commission: “Positive starting point but Government must address impunity” – UN expert

GENEVA (1 May 2013) – The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Myanmar, Tomás Ojea Quintana, today welcomed some forward thinking recommendations from the Rakhine Investigation Commission report. However, he expressed concerns over the lack of recommendations to address impunity and ensure investigations into credible allegations of widespread and systematic human rights violations targeting the Muslim community in Rakhine State.

“The Investigation Commission’s report contains many worthwhile recommendations, which I encourage the Government of Myanmar to implement,” Mr. Ojea Quintana said after reviewing the recommendations of the 27-member Investigation Commission set up last year by the Myanmar President to look into the violence between communities in Rakhine State that took place in June, and then subsequently in October.

“There are important recommendations on addressing the dire humanitarian situation in the Muslim camps for internally displaced people (IDP), including overcrowding, access to clean water and sanitation, the risk of disease, food security and child malnutrition, as well as on improving access to education and livelihoods,” he said.  Continue reading “UN expert -Myanmar / Rakhine Commission: “Positive starting point but Government must address impunity”-ENGL-BUR”
