What has become today of reforms in Burma will pass while new and unpredictable change will happen after Aung San Suu Kyi and President Thein Sein finish taking their premature victory laps in the United States. No one yet knows what will happen here and nothing is set in stone in Burma. Although it appears that Burma is on the road to democratic nirvana it is not too far from the starting point where it found itself when the almighty savior of the free world, the United States, lifted investment sanctions thus making plunder of Burma’s resources easier for civil society and western corporations. In fact, aside from a move away from automobiles using natural gas to a tsunami of gasoline engine vehicles flooding the streets of Yangon and Mandalay, causing massive traffic jams, high gasoline…

Police said a burnt voltage regulator found under the stairs along with other flammable items including diesel was the reason behind the recent fire at Yagon mosque that ended the lives of 13 children.
The witnesses told the police that the voltage regulator was used on the night before the fire incident and the regulator’s alarm was ringing while it was on fire. The regulator was a manual type so it did not automatically cut off the voltage, according to the police report released to the public.
According to the report, the fire started from overheated regulator, leaving 13 children out of 16 children falling asleep upstairs dead. Two children who managed to escape the fire said when the fire started in the downstairs landing, they woke up suddenly and run down. Although the steps were hot, they had not caught fire, they said.
Yangon Region chief minister held a press conference yesterday on the report of the investigation commission’s findings over the mosque fire that killed 13 children last Tuesday.
The commission interviewed 41 witnesses including staffs from respective departments, locals who helped during the fire, teachers and students who lived at the mosque, officials from Islamic organisations, social organisations, and the students who were sleeping upstairs and survived the fire.
Another child who was the last to escape recounted that he had to jump from upstairs as the whole stairs had caught fire, the report stated.
In the report, mosque teacher Zeya Phyo confessed that he happened to forget to take out the children sleeping upstairs as he was fearfully trying to put out the fire together with senior students.

As the fire escalated, the windows were found difficult to open because they were installed with iron bars. With the whole stairs catching fire at the same time, the children might be finding it difficult to run downstairs. Consequently, the sleeping children upstairs had presumably died of smoke when the upstairs floor caught fire, the report stated.
According to the investigation, the two responsible teachers’ poor handling of the situation led to the deaths of 13 children sleeping upstairs the mosque, the report said.
When the police showed the victims the blanket and the piece of old clothes soaked with diesel, which were found at the scene, the children said they did not know whose blanket it was and the piece of clothes was worn by a boy, but they did not remember, the report said.
According to two persons living next door to the mosque, who first saw the fire, no suspicious-looking people were found near and around the mosque during the fire, which was caused not because of arson attacks as rumours said. The report also reviewed that two religious teachers Zeya Phyo and Khin Maung Aye spread rumours fearing blame from the public for the deaths of innocent children.
Yangon Region chief minister Myint Swe said: “When we summoned 41 witnesses to question about the mosque fire, we have learnt that the 13 deaths were caused by the two mosque teachers’ failure to handle the situation properly. But their rumours cast doubts and suspicions among the religious communities. Legal action will be taken for that in accord with the law.” The report suggested that legal action should be taken against those two teachers.
