Government plans to rebuild 1,590 homes destroyed in Meikhtila riots

emg

The national government plans to provide houses to those whose homes were torched during last month’s deadly riots in Meikhtila and will spend 3.5 million kyats for each house, said a director of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement’s Relief and Resettlement Department.

Department director Than Htut Swe said about 5.3 billion kyats would be spent to rebuild the homes and that each one would be 18 by 24 feet.

“We have already provided mats and nets to the refugees in the relief camps. We also provided consumer goods like rice, edible oil, salt, beans and other requirements,” he said, adding that the new homes would be built when the situation in the town in Mandalay Region was stable.

Three days of rioting in Meikhtila resulted in the destruction of 1,594 houses, most from arson attacks. Houses were torched in 11 of its 14 wards, but two wards bore the brunt: Nandawkone and Thiri Mingalar.

The official said those who lost homes will also receive household utensils and connections to power lines and piped water.

A resident of a camp in Magyikone Monastery said officials had informed families in the camp that they would get new homes.

Myanmar has launched an official inquiry into a blaze at a Muslim school that killed 13 boys, state media said on Wednesday, as authorities sought to dismiss fears the fire was linked to religious unrest.

A seven-member commission is to set up a “probe into the death of the young boys” in the Yangon mosque complex, according to the English-language New Light of Myanmar, which said the group would present its findings by Friday.

The blaze early on Tuesday spread fears among local Muslims that their community may have been targeted following a spate of Buddhist-Muslim killings and arson that has spread across central Myanmar in recent weeks.

But authorities have insisted the incident was a tragic accident, blaming an electrical fault and the inadequate response of two teachers who were sleeping at the school when the fire broke out.

“We have handed over evidence to the commission already and they will continue to investigate the case. It should be easy for them because we have found the cause,” Myint Aye, head of local district police said.

He said one of the teachers was being questioned in custody, while police were still searching for the other man.

State media accused the detained man of falsely spreading rumours that the fire was started deliberately.

Around 70 children, some orphans, were sleeping in dormitories at the school when the fire broke out under the stairs, according to authorities who said the victims died of suffocation when they were unable to escape because of bars on the windows.

Police and soldiers patrolled near the scorched blue mosque and religious school soon after the fire amid fears that the incident could stoke further religious tensions in the country.

Hundreds of mourners packed a Muslim cemetery in a northern suburb of the city to bury the bodies on Tuesday afternoon, with many in the crowd expressing fears the fire had been started deliberately.

But local Muslim leader Ye Naung Thein, who initially raised concerns that the fire may have been deliberate, said he believed “one hundred per cent” the local authorities’ assertion that the blaze was an accident.

“We accept the commission,” he told reporters on behalf of his Myanmar Mawlwy federation, one of several influential Muslim groups in Myanmar.

“Everything is reasonable and I do not think there was an external cause. This is because of the weakness of the mosque teachers in responding quickly enough to the alarm,” he said.

A delegation from Myanmar is expected to arrive in Canada in the next few weeks

A delegation from Myanmar is expected to arrive in Canada in the next few weeks, on the heels of a draft report that suggests parliamentarians from the country want to learn about Canada’s “parliamentary oversight over the spending of public funds.”

The visit will be in response to the multi-party Canadian delegation to Myanmar, also known as Burma, from Feb. 16 to 22, Than Htwe, a counsellor at the embassy of Myanmar, said in an interview.

The delegation is expected on April 22, Mr. Htwe said, although another observer said visa issues could delay that date.

Embassy has also obtained a draft copy of the report outlining the results of the Canadian delegation. It recommends the reciprocal delegation, as well as for Prime Minister Stephen Harper to travel to the country, and that the Canadian embassy presence in the country should focus more on strengthening democratic institutions, among other recommendations.

The report also outlines “key areas of interest” that parliamentarians from Myanmar expressed about Canadian parliamentary democracy, including “Parliamentary oversight over the spending of public funds: the role of the public accounts committee and the auditor general.”

The delegation to Canada will also follow in the footsteps of Canada’s recent diplomatic courting of the Southeast Asian nation. The government announced Canada’s new ambassador to Myanmar on March 29, Mark McDowell, and is also promising a first-ever embassy that would be opened “in the coming months.”  Continue reading “A delegation from Myanmar is expected to arrive in Canada in the next few weeks”

INDONESIA : 50% of Kids Victims of Sex Abuse, Group Says

Almost half of Indonesia’s children have fallen prey to instances of sexual harassment, according to a nongovernmental organization advocating children’s issues.

The National Commission for Child Protection (Komnas Anak) claimed on Tuesday that about 50 percent of the country’s 21 million children had been victims of such abuse, though the figure excluded children who did not report their cases to the authorities.

From January to April, Komnas Anak received 127 reports of child abuse in the Greater Jakarta area alone.

Arist Merdeka Sirait, the chairman of the commission, noted that East Jakarta had become the most unsafe area for children in the capital, having recorded the most cases of sexual harassment.

Komnas Anak said that 51 percent, or 67 reports, came from East Jakarta. Last year, the NGO received 2,637 reports on child abuse in Greater Jakarta, with 190 cases originating from East Jakarta.

“Jakarta had the highest instances [of sexual abuse cases] in 2012, with 663. East Jakarta is the most prone to sexual abuse against minors,” Arist said at his office in Jakarta.

He attributed the high rate of violence against children in East Jakarta to the area’s population density. He also said that about 80 percent of East Jakarta residents were in the medium to low income bracket.

“Low education level is also one of the factors,” Arist added.

The chairman praised the East Jakarta Police for their quick response and follow-up to every report they received.

“My hope is that the police will continue to solve all cases of sexual harassment against children in accordance with the law so that there can be a deterrent effect,” he said.

He cited the three East Jakarta areas that were most unfriendly to children as Kramat Jati, Ciracas and Cakung.  Continue reading “INDONESIA : 50% of Kids Victims of Sex Abuse, Group Says”
