Academics from the Nitirat (Enlightened Jurists) group and well-known scholars are calling for whole scale reform of the courts, from legal texts to ideologies, to achieve a judicial system more in line with democracy.

After the 2006 coup, the courts have become one of the mechanisms contributing to political conflict in Thai society, therefore they need to uphold democratic and human rights principles to revive their credibility, the academic group told a university forum on Sunday, held under title “The Courts and Social Justice in Thailand.”

Worachet Pakeerut, a member of the Nitirat group and Thammasat associate professor of law, said the involvement of the courts in the political arena, such as the dissolution of three political parties in 2008 or ongoing prosecutions under the lèse majesté law only serves the establishment’s interests and contradicts democratic principles.

“This problem isn’t just at a normal level, but is deeply ingrained in the ideology widespread among judges,” he said.

Thai PBS television channel decided to cancel the broadcast of the last programme of its talk show series discussing the issue of constitutional monarchy, after a group of about 20 ‘Thai patriots’ protested at the station on the evening of 15 March.

The programme, entitled ‘Tob Jote Prathet Thai’ or ‘Answering (or Tackling) Problems of Thailand’, had run its previous four programmes in the series since Monday night.  Each of the first three programmes had a different guest, former Foreign Minister Surakiart Sathirathai, Thammasat lecturer Somsak Jeamteerasakul, and former palace police chief Pol Gen Vasit Dejkunjorn, while the last two programmes covered a debate between Somsak and social critic Sulak Sivaraksa.

However, just a few hours before the second half of the debate was to go on air, the group gathered at the television station and demanded the cancellation of the broadcast of the programme, claiming that Somsak and Sulak talked about the monarchy improperly and harboured the intention to amend Section 112 of the Criminal Code.

Consequently, the TPBS executives decided to air an earlier programme about a slain Muslim leader in the south instead.

On 16 March, Phinyo Traisuriyathamma, the host of the programme, announced that he and the production team would cease to produce the programme.

The first half of the debate, which was broadcast on the night of 14 March, started with Somsak and Sulak continuing the argument they had previously had on Facebook over the recent Bangkok gubernatorial election.

Prachuap Khiri Khan pineapple canning company filed criminal defamation charges against a British human rights advocate over treatment of migrant workers by the company.

Natural Fruit Co Ltd, which has headquarters in Pran Buri, claimed that Andy Hall, a British citizen, had damaged its reputation with libellous statements about its relations with migrant workers, according to papers at the website of the Southern Bangkok Criminal Court’s website and NGO sources.

Mr Hall, 32, well-known in Thaland although he was reportedly in Myanmar on Tuesday, faces charges under the Computer Crimes Act that carry penalties of up to five years in prison on each count.

In addition, the company filed a civil suit at the Nakhon Pathom Court claiming 300 million baht in civil damages…

“Try to keep the government out of regulating the internet. The answer to bad speech is more speech and more communication and voices,” said Schmidt.

He said that the company’s first priority in Myanmar would be to to improve access to information through its search, translation and mapping applications.

Speaking to Mizzima at the event, Amy Kunrojpanya, head of communications and public affairs at Google, said “It’s very easy to assume things when you look at the GDP numbers, internet penetration, smartphone usage, mobile phone penetration, then when you get into the country and  you catch the excitement of the people. There is a lot of potential that we can explore.”

On the eve of Schmidt’s speech, Google announced that it had launched a dedicated browser for Myanmar at http://www.google.com.mm.

This visit marks the latest step in Myanmar’s rapidly developing tech and telecoms sector. The country currently has one of the lowest internet usage and mobile phone penetrations in the world and more than 90 telecoms firms have reportedly bid for tenders for four telecoms operating licenses.

Schmidt is scheduled to meet with President Thein Sein later on Friday afternoon.

Google သည္ အင္တာနက္ ရွာေဖြေရး အင္ဂ်င္အျဖစ္သာမက Gmail, Google+ စသည့္ အျခား၀န္ေဆာင္မႈမ်ားႏွင့္ Google Nexus စသည့္ ထုတ္ကုန္မ်ားပါ ေက်ာ္ၾကားမႈရွိေနၿပီး ယင္း၀န္ေဆာင္မႈမ်ားကို ျပည္တြင္း၌ သံုးစြဲမႈမ်ားစြာ ရွိေနေၾကာင္း သိရသည္။

Google Company ကို ၁၉၉၈ ခုႏွစ္တြင္ Larry Page ႏွင့္ Sergey Brin တို႔က စတင္တည္ေထာင္ခဲ့ၿပီး လက္ရွိတြင္ Larry Page က စီအီးအိုအျဖစ္ တာ၀န္ယူ လုပ္ကိုင္လ်က္ရွိသည္။ အဲရစ္ရွမစ္ အေနျဖင့္ Google တြင္ စီအီးအိုအျဖစ္ ၂၀၀၁ ခုႏွစ္မွ ၂၀၁၁ ခုႏွစ္အထိ လုပ္ကိုင္ခဲ့ၿပီး ၂၀၁၁ ခုႏွစ္၊ ဧၿပီလတြင္ Larry Page က စီအီးအိုအျဖစ္ ေျပာင္းလဲတာ၀န္ယူ လုပ္ကိုင္ခဲ့သည္။
