Ladpadaung Copper mine protesters dismantle camps-photos Ko Han Wing Aung

Local residents protesting against the Letpadaungtaung copper mine in Sagaing Region dismantled their protest camps on Saturday, two days after Aung San Suu Kyi and other members of the commission set up to investigate the controversial project in Monywa district visited them.

About 50 protesters dismantled a camp in Ton village, Salingyi township, and burned down another on Leikkun hill, local residents said.

The protesters said, however, that they would continue their effort to have the copper mine shut. The mine, a joint venture between a Chinese-owned company and a company owned by Myanmar’s military, has seen protests over alleged environmental damage and land grabs. A violent crackdown on the protesters last year sparked national anger. A commission to investigate the mine was set up with opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi as its chair.

The commission’s report released last week said that the project should continue. Suu Kyi visited the area following criticism of her report.
