Remembering and Honouring Union Day of Burma. Today, February 12, is the 66th Annivesary of Burma’s Union Day.
Today, the signing of the 1947 Panglong Agreement is being celebrated all over the country, as it was for the past 65 years.
Since 2010, following the release of Aung San Suu Kyi and the opening of peace talks with armed resistance movements, voices calling for “Panglong II”, “21st century Panglong” and “a conference even surpassing Panglong” have become louder.
A re-visit of the original Panglong Agreement is therefore necessary in order to decide whether we should keep it intact and all we have to worry is the implementation. Or whether we should find ways to improve on the original treaty.
The 9 point text, in a nutshell, give 5 promises to the non-Burman territories:
Some critics have said “autonomy,” interpreted as “self rule”, is not enough, that a state should not only have self administrative powers, but also powers to make its own laws and administer justice in accordance with its own laws.
However, others have pointed out that the word “autonomy”, coming from Greek words “auto” (self) and “nomos” (law), together meaning “giving oneself one’s own law”, should be enough to include all the three powers demanded by the non-Burmans. Or even more, because “autonomy” is synonymous, in some cases, with “Independence”.
Therefore, this auspicious day marking the union forged by our forefathers should not only for joy seeking but also for deep meditation of how to make this country a union of heart and soul, and not one forged by sheer military prowess. panglong org

Myanmar’s opposition leader says she hasn’t been offered to participate in peace efforts to end fighting in the northern state of Kachin.
Aung San Suu Kyi, chairperson of the National League for Democracy, told reporters on the sidelines of a parliamentary session in Nay Pyi Taw on Wednesday, adding that she had said she was ready to give a hand to the process if offered by the government.
“Everyone has to keep discipline. It is not appropriate to intervene in everything. I have already offered. It would be good for me to take part in the peace process only if concerned authorities accepted me,” the Nobel laureate said.
Ethnic people, including members of parliament representing various ethnic groups, reportedly have expressed their willingness to accept a credible person like Suu Kyi as a mediator in the Kachin peace process, believing that it will facilitate the efforts.
A Lower House MP however said she should participate in the ongoing peace efforts even though she is not entrusted with responsibilities.
“People want Aung San Suu Kyi to get involved. We (Kachin people) once sent her a letter of request. But she declined it citing no invitation from the government. In my opinion, she should take part in the process regardless of whether she has been offered or not. If she participates, the process may be more effective depending on her capacity,” said MP Daw Dwe Bu representing Injanyan Township, Kachin State.
The government’s union level peace-making committee and the Kachin Independence Organisation (KIO) held peace talks in the Chinese border town of Ruili on February 4 and issued a joint statement.
In the statement, both sides agreed to hold another round of talks before the end of the month.

A brutal attack in Maungdaw Township in Rakhine State early morning on February 10 killed at least one Rakhine national and injured three others seriously, according to sources.
In what was described as “terrorist act”, the incident took place in Myothit village in Maungdaw, allgedly carried bout by a group of 15 Bengalis.
Disguising themselves as Nasaka members (Myanmar border security forces), the attackers arrived at a house of a Rakhine national named Ba Tin at around 00:15 AM that day. They used Myanmar language not Bengali to wake up him to attack.
He was seriously injured from the vicious attack. Another man named Maung Aye (aged 54) was killed at the scene when he went down from the upstairs to see what’s happening at that time. Gun shots were also heard, said local people.
Two villagers namely Saw Myint Aung (39) and Nay Lin Aung (23) were wounded by the gunshots when they came to give help.
The incident occurred in the village about 300 yards away from Nasaka Centre in Ngakura village.
“They killed them not for money or something valuable. Ngakura is a village where Bengalis came and went freely. So everyone needs to be cautious and the offenders need to be arrested. There are still no effective actions taken [by the authorities] against the violence occurring in Maungdaw,” said a Ngakura villager.
