How many Bangladeshis have illegally migrated to Rakhine state of Myanmar? Answer: About one million so far.

As far back as 1975, the then Bangladesh Ambassador to Myanmar Khwaja Mohammed Kaiser admitted “there were upward of 1/2 million Bangalee (Bangladeshi) trespassers in Arakan (Rakhine state) whom the Burmese (Myanmar) had some right to eject. He had implored the Burmese authorities not to press this issue during Bangladesh’s present troubles [COUP of August and November 1975] and had been pleased that the Burmese had not taken advantage of his country’s misfortune in this respect’.

For the first time since 1996, Burma is not among the nations jailing journalists

• The number of journalists held on anti-state charges, 132, is the highest CPJ has recorded, although its proportion of the overall tally, about 57 percent, is consistent with surveys in recent years.

Investigation body discloses military’s land confiscations in western Myanmar

Parliamentary investigation commission on land grabbing cases  has found that former senior military personnel involved in land confiscation cases in Rakhine State.

The commission has conducted field investigation into land confiscation cases in Kyaunkphyu and Thandwe townships beginning December.

“Farmers made complaints that  former military personnel confiscated their lands without giving reasonable compensation. Without being used effectively, the farmlands were registered with the Union of Myanmar Economic Holdings Ltd, and the sons and daughters of former senior military generals. The findings will be submitted to the Parliament,” said MP Ba Shein, a member of investigation commission, from Rakhine Nationals Progressive Party.

The commission also found that the land grabbing cases in Kyaunkphyu Township were Danyawadi Naval Base connived in one land grabbing case; Light Infantry Battalion 542 in one case; and Military Intelligence Service in two cases, as well as private owned Shwe Group Company in one case, and village administrator and police in-charge of Natikyun village police station in two cases.

“Military Intelligence Service gave the confiscated lands as a gift of wedding ceremony to the daughter of General Win Myint(Secretary 3 of previous military government),” said the MP.

There are four complaints about land grabbing cases in Thandwe Township, in which the navy involved in one cases, Infantry Battalion 55 in one case, the daughter of former General Khin Maung Than in one case, and the daughter of Thandwe district administrator in one case.

The former commanders of Rakhine State Lt-General Win Myint, Major General Maung Oo, Major General Thaung Aye, Brigadier General Thura Maung Ni, and former Transportation Minister Major Thein Swe grabbed the lands and registered with the names of their families. Then they received hundred million of kyats in compensation as these lands were included  in the Shwe Gas Project, according the Irrawaddy website.

The Shwe Gas Project—launched by Myanmar’s military government in 2009—is expected to become the government’s single largest source of foreign revenue, through the extraction and export of natural gas to China.

The commission was formed in the Parliament on July 26, 2012 to investigate the land confiscation cases across the country.

The commission unveiled that land grabbing cases largely occurred in Ayewawaddy and Yangon regions, complaints of the farmers are mostly found true, and there are 176 complaints in  Ayeyawaddy Region.
