KIO implements Drug Destruction Plan

On the morning of September 26^th the Kachin Independence Organization’s (KIO) Central Drug Destruction Group held a meeting with residents of Laizar to address the issue of drugs being produced in the area. “If we do not put an end to this drugs will destroy Kachin State, we need to make this a drug free zone. We need to join hands with the local people and address this issue,” said a central military officer of the group.

The meeting was led by Lieutenant General GanShao, the leader of KIO’s Central Drug Destruction Group at KIO’s Laizar High School. In attendance were KIA (Kachin Independence Army) officers, students, Laizar residents, and refugees, totaling 2,417 people.

At the beginning of September KIO’s Central Drug Destruction Group worked with a local youth group and a local woman’s group to burn opium plants near Pansai (KyuKote) in the northern part of Shan State, and plan to continue the burning of plants in other areas.
