KKO’s(DKBA) Chairman and General Secretary temporarily suspended

KKO_01_443According to Saw Mo Shae, brigadier general of Democratic Karen Buddhist Army, (DKBA), the chief of staff Major General Saw Lar Bwe of Kalohtoobaw Karen Organization (KKO) has temporarily suspended their Chairman and General Secretary. “We have plans to register KKO as an official political party. The Chairman and Secretary do not have citizenship and they also attended the United Nationalities Federal Council (UNFC) in Chiang Mai. This goes against the KKO policy,” said Saw Mo Shae.

The announcement of suspension for Mahn Robert Bazan, Chairman of KKO, and U Thomas (U Gon Aung), General Secretary, came on September 11th for attending the UNFC meeting this week in Chaing Mai, which is an illegal ethnic army group opposing the current government. The Major General of KKO claims that the temporary suspension cannot come into effect until their next meeting, where all members, including Mahn Robert Bazan and U Thomas, will choose a new Chairman and General Secretary.  Saw Mo Shae said that their duties are only suspended temporarily because they went against the policies of the KKO but they can be elected back into their positions in the future.

KKO was formed out of DKBA’s commanding officers meeting on April 4th of this year in Kawthumawekhee Camp in Sone See Myaing Village, Myawaddy Township in Karen State. Back in November 2010, KKO’s Major General Saw Lar Bwe defected from DKBA after ceasefire stipulations that a border guard force will be put in place. DKBA has already had three discussions with the government in 2012.

ASIAN DEVELOPMENT BANK -Burma_ Myanmar: Interim Country Partnership Strategy 2012-2014 (Draft Documents for Consultation)

Date: September 2012
Type: Country Planning Documents
Country:
Myanmar
Subject:
ADB administration and governance

Description

In response to ongoing major reform moves by the Government of Myanmar, ADB is now preparing a re-engagement strategy (interim country partnership strategy), which will guide our approach towards full resumption of operations. The interim strategy provides the framework for rapid reengagement, while affording the space required for further analytical work, capacity building, policy dialogue, and broad-based consultations with all development stakeholders, leading to a fully-fledged country partnership strategy. The interim strategy, as summarized in the consultation draft, is informed by ADB’s initial economic and sector assessments on Myanmar, as well as consultations with the country’s government, development partners, civil society, and the business community during the period June to August 2012. The proposed interim strategy envisions a highly consultative process to form the basis of the ensuing full country partnership strategy.

Naw Kham’s-Godfather of Golden Triangle -case: Lost in translation again!

THURSDAY, 20 SEPTEMBER 2012 13:51 S.H.A.N.

One thing very clear that comes out of the CCTV’s reports on “Godfather” Naw Kham, who together with 5 colleagues are on trial today in Kunming, Yunnan province, is that he has yet to admit to the murder charges leveled at him and his gang.

Suspects of last year’s deadly attack on the Mekong River that left 13 Chinese sailors killed are on trial at the Kunming Intermediate People’s Court in Kunming, capital of Southwest China’s Yunnan province, Sept 20, 2012. Naw Kham from Myanmar, along with five other gang members, faced trial at the court. [Photo/Xinhua]

Its 18 September report includes a Q & A between him and the police:

Police: “Why were you arrested?”

Naw Kham: “Because I planned and killed 13 Chinese sailors on the Mekong River on Oct 15th 2011.”

That was the translation. But after listening carefully to what he said in Shan, it comes out like this:

“It concerns the killing on 2 Chinese ships on 10 October. They mistook me (for the killing) and had arrested me.”

Which goes on to show that China’s judiciary will need better interpreters well versed both in Chinese and Shan, who are not hard to find especially on the Burmese side of the border. Until the court has procured the services of such people, this trial should not proceed. But if it does proceed and the verdict comes out the way all of us are anticipating, then all of us, especially the Chinese judiciary, are violating the Universal Declaration of Human Rights Article 11: Continue reading “Naw Kham’s-Godfather of Golden Triangle -case: Lost in translation again!”
