Dr. Tun Aung accused of involving in igniting the current riots was detained this afternoon

A UN Worker Detained in Maungdaw

19:45 hrs Yangon June 11, 2012 (YPI)

Dr. Tun Aung accused of involving in igniting the current riots was detained this afternoon from the compound of UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) by police in Maungdaw – a town where the riots began-, according to well-placed sources.

YPI’s sources in Maungdaw said that the UN worker requested Maungdaw authorities on June 8 to grantpermission to the Bengalis to pray for those who were killed by an unknown mob. He reportedly promised that there would be no problem.

“As far as we know, he (Dr. Tun Aung) was detained to be interrogated why this riots started,” said a local resident.

As his daughter Mya Nandar Aung is also accused of involving in the riots, she was detained at Sittwe Airport on her way back to Yangon.

Namtu silver mine workers end strike after agreement was reached with the Win Myint Mo company (ASIA WORLD)

Workers calling for increased pay and better treatment ended their strike Friday, 8 June, after agreement was reached with the Win Myint Mo company, a subsidiary of Asia World, reported Kawli Media.

Asia World is owned by former “King of Opium” Lo Hsing Han and his son Stephen Law aka Tun Myint Naing.

The workers went on strike on 31 May after the company failed to pay for their overtime working during the April Water Throwing Festival.

The 9 point demand include:

  • Basic pay
  • 40 hour work per week
  • Repair of damaged railroad between Namtu and Bawdwin
  • Exemption from water and electricity tax
  • Freedom to set up a trade union
  • Not to discharge workers at will
  • Monthly pay for daily-wage workers plus overtime
  • Right to receive 30,000 kyat ($ 37.5) government grant beginning May
  • Appointment of a doctor at Bawdwin Hospital and treatment free of charge

Signed by 517 workers, a petition was submitted to President Thein Sein on 5 June.

Company representatives had agreed to Point 1-6 unconditionally. As for Point 7, the company said it could agree to paying the daily-wage workers K 2,100 ($ 2.6) per day. Government grants would be paid beginning June. It will also apply for a doctor from the state government but the workers are required to foot their medical bills partly.

The Namtu-Bawdwin mines, operated since the British days, still boasts more than 11 million tons of ore. It had been one of the main revenue earners for the Shan State Government before Independence. It was taken over by the Win Myint Mo 2 years earlier “somewhat reluctantly”, according to the workers, resulting in the fall in the production.

“More than 200 workers were sacked since the beginning of the year,” said a protestor. “The company now promised there will be no lay-off within the next 6-months.”

WAR: Bumese soldiers of 437th LIR, who are responsible for security of Taping hydropower plant, crossed over to KIA’s 15th Battalion Territory

– On June 8, Bumese soldiers of 437th LIR, who are responsible for security of Taping hydropower plant, crossed over to KIA’s 15th Battalion under 3rd Brigade’s territory. Captain Myat Ko Ko and Lt. Ko Ko Win and policeman Ye Naing were stopped and detained by KIA troops as they walked past the last gate in KIA’s 15th Battalion areas.

– At about 9 pm, Burmese army’s northern command called KIO’s liason office in Myitkyina to release those being detained by KIA. KIO in turn asked for release of KIO members in prisons being held during ceasefire era, in exchange for two Burmese army’s officers and a policeman.

– While a negotiation was going on between KIO and Northern command, Burmese army prepared to attack KIA’s 15th Battalion. At around midnight on June 8, Burmese army columns began marching from Momauk to Sanggang. Burmese army’s 437th LIR and 348th LIR arrived at Sanggang on June 9, 2011 at 3:30am. Burmese army surrounded KIO’s liason office in Sanggang and arrested KIA’s lance corporal Gawmo Chang Ying on June 9 at 5 am.

– Burmese army started firing at KIA soldiers stationed at nearby Bumsen post at 7 am on June 9. At that moment, KIA began a defensive war that would continue to this day. The first battle that began after 17 years of ceasefire lasted for about 4 hours.

– KIA intelligence unit intercepted a message from Burmese army’s northern command ordering to shoot with 5 bazookas and use 60 mm mortar shells to attack KIA’s reinforcement to Bumsen post.

– At about 8 am, Burmese army’s northern command asked for exchange of prisoners and offered the release of KIA soldiers being arrested in the past. KIO requested a proof letter for the offer but Burmese army refused to issue any letter. At 9:30am, Burmese army warned KIO not to harm those Burmese soldiers being detained by KIA. Emergency rule declared in Arakan state

Burma’s western Arakan state began a period of emergency rule Monday as authorities struggle to contain explosive sectarian tensions following deadly clashes between Muslims and Buddhists in the region.

President Thein Sein ordered the security measures in response to riots that saw hundreds of Buddhist villagers’ homes set ablaze and left seven dead on Friday and Saturday, state television said late Sunday, adding that unrest had been “increasing”.

Violent attacks fueled by “hatred and revenge based on religion and nationality” in Arakan could spread to other parts of the country, Burma’s premier warned in an address to the nation.

He said conflicts also threatened to undermine stability, development and moves towards democratisation by Burma’s new government, which took power last year following decades of outright military rule and has ushered in a series of reforms.

Arakan state is named for its dominant, mostly Buddhist ethnic group, but is also home to a large Muslim population including the Rohingya, a stateless people described by the UN as one of the world’s most persecuted minorities. Continue reading “Emergency rule declared in Arakan state”
