Ruling USDP attack NLD youth

A spokesperson for the National League for Democracy has accused members of Burma’s ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party of seriously injuring two of their youth members in Twantay Township, Yangon Division in early November.

According to NLD members one of the youths received serious head injuries in the attack that needed hospital treatment.

Ko Ye Htunt, NLD the youth coordinator for Twantay Township told Karen News that the alleged incident occurred while the two NLD youth members – Aung Kyaw Zaw and Kyaw Moe Htet – were on their way back from distributing an invitation letter to NLD members to attend a meeting. Four members from the USDP attacked the two NLD youths with iron bars. Ko Ye Htunt said one of the NLD youths involved in the attack had to be admitted to hospital to get treatment for his injuries.

“The attack happened at about 10 pm, while Kyaw Moe Htet and Aung Kyaw Zaw were sending invitation letter for our upcoming meeting. Kyaw Moe Htet’s head was badly cut, his lips and back are also badly injured – we had to take him to hospital.”

Karen News confirmed Kyaw Moe Htet’s admission to Twantay Township Public Hospital with a woman health worker.

NLD sources said the attack happened on Yate Tha road and the perpetrators were Ko Win Naing, Ko Kyaw Tint, Ko Sein Kyaw Thu and Ko Myo Myo who belong to the USDP’s notorious ‘Swan Arr Shin’ who were used by the former regime to bully and beat up political opponents.

According to Ko Ye Htunt, the NLD have filed the incident to the Twantay Police Office for the attackers to be charge under article 325/114.

Ko Ye Htunt said since the NLD filed the case, with the police the perpetrators have threatened to kill both the two victims, Aung Kyaw Zaw and Kyaw Moe Htet, if they don’t withdraw their complaint.

Ko Ye Htunt said the USDP members responsible for the alleged attack threaten to kill the victims.

“The next day they went to the two beaten guys and told them to withdraw the charges. If not, they would hire a gunman to kill them. Right now, we [NLD] are trying to avoid any conflict that could lead to chaos between us and the government.”

According to NLD sources, conflict between the NLD members and government officials is common. There have been other outstanding charges laid by NL D officials in October that police officers from in Twantay Township Station have yet to settled or resolve.

DKBA’s go-it-alone ceasefire deal weakens ethnic strength

The Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) has reached a ceasefire agreement with the Burmese government following a day of negotiations held recently in the Karen State capital of Hpa-an.

A spokesperson for the DKBA, Major San Aung spoke toKaren News about the ceasefire.
“The ceasefire has been reach between representatives of the DKBA Klo Htoo Baw Brigade and the Burmese government in Hpa-an that the Klo Htoo Baw Brigade and the Burma Army will stop fighting. It was agreed the Burma Army would stop their offensive against the DKBA.”

Major San Aung said both sides a agreed to set up a liaison office in the border town of Myawaddy.
“Soldiers from both sides passing through one another’s territory will have to get prior permission. People don’t want fighting in their area so we agreed to a ceasefire.”

The DKBA’s Klo Htoo Baw’s (also known as Brigade 5), who are led by Brigadier General Saw Ler Pwe or Na Ka Mwe, agreed to a ceasefire with the former military government.

A DKBA source said, for security reasons, Brigadier General Saw Ler Pwe did not actively take part in the negotiations, but was represented by his six of his top military leaders..

The latest meeting was not the first time the two sides had met to settle for a ceasefire.

Brigadier General Saw Ler Pwe came to prominence and the attention of the international media when he refused to bring his DKBA Brigade under the control of the Burma Army as a Border Guard Force militia.

On 7th November last year Brigadier General Saw Ler Pwe laid siege to the Burmese border town of Myawaddy. The Burma Army responsed and the resulting bombardment forced 20,000 people to take refuge in neighboring Thailand.

At the time Brigadier General Saw Ler Pwe said.
“We do this because the Burma army are not honest and we cannot put up with it anyone more. If they shoot, we are ready to fight back.”

From the battlefield, at the time Major General Saw Ler Pwe explained by phone to Karen News how he was fighting on behalf of all of the ethnic people of Burma.

“The regime oppresses all the ethnic people of Burma,” he said. “Our action today is the will of our people — they have wanted it for a long time.”

Many Karen people have voiced their concerns at Major General Saw Ler Pwe latest actions and hope it is not the restart of the Burma Army using Karen to fight Karen.

ထိုေန႔တြင္ပင္ ကရင္အမ်ဳိးသားလြတ္ေျမာက္ေရးတပ္မေတာ္-KNLA ဗိုလ္ဒိငါး ဦးေဆာင္သည့္ တပ္ရင္း(၂၂)မွ အစိုးရစစ္တပ္ ကို တိုက္ခိုက္ခဲ့ရာ အစိုးရတပ္မွ ၂ဦး က်ဆံုးၿပီး ၁၂ဦး ဒဏ္ရာရရွိခဲ့သည္။

2 workers from Back Pack Health Worker Team arrested by Burmese Army

The Burma Army in Papun Township has arrested two community health workers from the Back Pack Health Worker Team who were giving medical treatment to villagers in the area.

The Back Pack Health Worker Team is an independent and non-profit organization that has been delivering primary health care for over 13 years to people in conflict zones and rural areas deep inside Burma – where access to healthcare is otherwise unavailable.

Currently the BPHWT have 80 Back Pack teams of three to five medics delivering medical services to 187,000 internally displaced people in eastern Burma.

Major Saw Kler Doh, an office manager with the Karen National Liberation Army Brigade 5, based in the Papun District confirmed to Karen News, that on October 29, the Burma Army Light Infantry Battalion 212 arrested both the male and female health workers who were providing health care to villagers in the Koe Khee area.

“The health workers were arrested while seeing a patient at a betel nut plantation in the area. The Burma Army soldiers arrived to unexpectedly at the plantation and happened like that.”

The male worker is named as Saw Phar Say, 25, his female co-worker is, 24,.

At the time of writing the latest update from the KNLA’s Major Saw Kler Doh, is that Naw K’Mwee has been sent to the Burma Army Strategic Operations Command HQ in Papun, the Major was unable to confirm the whereabouts of Saw Phar Say.

Burma Army Infantry Battalion 19 and Light Infantry Battalin 340, 341 and 434 operate in the area, eastern Papun town where the two health workers were arrested.

In 10 years, gunfire or landmines have killed nine Back Pack medics and one traditional birth attendant. The most recent killing was in 2010, when Burma army soldiers shot a medic.

Saw Livingstone a long time member of the Back Pack was recently reported assessing the dangers of delivering health care in Burma.

“If the Burma army is in the area when we are treating patients we have to leave. If we are found we can be arrested, tortured and even killed – not only us, but also the villagers for receiving treatment.”
Livingstone, 35, says villagers known to have received medical treatment are arrested.

“If the soldiers find a empty packet of basic medicine, they arrest the person, but it is also a big problem for the whole village. These villagers are poor. They can’t afford to buy medicine. They can’t work because of the travel restrictions, they can’t sell their farm produce and in some cases they are not allowed to travel to work on their farms. It’s a cruel cycle.”

Livingstone lists the ailments his Back Pack team treat – malaria, tuberculosis, pneumonia, bronchitis, accidents, falls, cuts, worms, dysentery, diarrhea, urinary tract infections, anemia, malnourishment, gunshot wounds and landmines.
