KNU Stops Tavoy Road Construction

A giant construction project managed by an Italian-Thai company has run into a number of major stumbling blocks in Karen State. Villagers say they have not been compensated for the loss of their land and the Karen National Union has stopped it building a highway to Thailand.

The Italian-Thai Development Company has begun negotiations with the Karen National Union to try to restart work on the Kanchanaburi-Tavoy Highway project after Karen soldiers stopped its construction in early July.

Work was stopped east of Tavoy, between Myitta village to Klo Hta village, by the Karen National Liberation Army. Continue reading “KNU Stops Tavoy Road Construction”

Burma: Black Hawk, with Thai commander on board, down in Burma

Chiang Mai (Mizzima) – Nine people were onboard a Thai Army Black Hawk that crashed in a forest in Burma across the border from Thailand on Tuesday, according to the Bangkok Post. Also on board the aircraft were two reporters, the source said.

According to an army source, Maj-Gen Tawan Ruangsri, commander of the 9th Infantry Division, and a number of army officers were flying to oversee the retrieval of the bodies of five soldiers who were killed in an earlier helicopter crash in Kaeng Krachan National Park in Ratchaburi province in Thailand on Saturday.

The national park lies along the Burmese border next to Burma’s Tenasserim Division.

The Black Hawk helicopter reportedly crashed before noon into the forest inside Burma, opposite Ban Khao Mai Daeng in Ratchaburi’s Kaeng Krachan district.

Further details were unavailable and the fate of those on board was not known.

Thai media reported the earlier crash on Saturday occurred half a mile from the Burma border. The helicopter, working on anti-logging operations in the national park, crashed in poor weather.

The army reportedly has six Black Hawk helicopters in operation. This is the first to have crashed.

Wa authorities, since early July, has been cracking down on drug addicts, Burmese agents and newcomers

19 July 2011
Wa authorities, since early July, has been cracking down on drug addicts, Burmese agents and newcomers. Until 15 July, they have already rounded up some 200 people, including Shans and Burmese. Those who agree to become Wa soldiers are given uniforms and kept apart from others. Those who refuse to become Wa soldiers are told they are to serve as laborers. As a result, the number of newcomers entering Wa territory has dropped during the last week. (SHAN)
