Burmese Govt Warns NLD to Stop Political Activity

Burma’s Ministry of Home Affairs sent a letter to pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and Aung Shwe, the chairman and general secretary of the National League for Democracy (NLD), to stop their political actions which are deemed to oppose the new Parliament and government, according to the state-run newspaper, The New Light of Myanmar. Quoting the letter, the newspaper said: “What’s more, it may lead to more difficulties in national reconsolidation. If they really want to accept and practice democracy effectively, they are to stop such acts that can harm peace and stability and the rule of law as well as the unity among the people, including monks and service personnel.” The newspaper reported that although the NLD was already dissolved because it did not re-register in accordance with the new political party registration law, the party kept its offices open and continued to conduct political activities. The newspaper also said that if the NLD wants to engage in social affairs, it has to register as a social organization with the Ministry of Home Affairs.
