The bomb exploded in the 7 Star Restaurant next to the Shwe Tadar Guest House near the Friendship Bridge, killing a girl in her teens and a boy, sources said.
‘It was a time bomb in a parcel. The parcel was put in the restaurant’, said a witness.
Two adults were seriously injured and taken to the Myawaddy Hospital, sources said. Their condition is not known.
After the bomb blast hit the restaurant, troops of the Border Guard Force fired into the sky, about five times, to warn people of the danger, according to witnesses.
After the explosion, a number of restaurants, clothing shops and currency exchange centres closed for business.
Bombings have occasionally occurred in Myawaddy, an important hub for border trade between Burma and Thailand. On August 6, 2010, a bomb blast in Myawaddy killed two people.
Troops of a breakaway faction of the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA), which has rejected the junta’s Border Guard Force plan, are stationed near Myawaddy. On November 8, fighting between the DKBA breakaway faction and junta troops broke out in Myawaddy, with the DKBA occupying the town for a short period.
