Myanmar, South Korean groups to strengthen ties

September 28, 2010

THE Myanmar-South Korea Friendship Association and a South Korean counterpart have signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at strengthening their relationship.

The MOU with the South Korea-Myanmar Interchange Association was signed in Yangon on February 24, said the general secretary of the Myanmar-South Korea Friendship Association, U Than Win.

It was signed by Dr Khin Shwe, the vice chairman of the Myanmar grouping, and Mr Mok Tak-hye Eun, the chair of the interchange association.

U Than Win said the MOU provided for the two non-government organisations to coordinate activities involving the economy, health, education, science and technology, social relations, culture and fine arts.

The two organisations also agreed to assist South Korea businesses to invest in Myanmar, U Than Win said.

He said the Myanmar-South Korea Friendship Association would help prospective South Korean investors to make contact with government departments and the private sector.

The Myanmar-South Korea Friendship Association, which was formed last November and was officially recognised by the government on January 20, has about 300 members, U Than Win said.

U Than Win said the association would hold a seminar this month aimed at strengthening ties with another counterpart grouping, the South Korea-Myanmar Friendship Association.

U Than Win said that as part of its cultural exchange activities, the Myanmar association was also organising a concert this month which would feature performances by members of the South Korean community in Myanmar, which numbers about 900 people.
