Mongshu has become the new gem-land

In the past, gems were mainly explored from Hpakant in Myanmar. Beyond1988, Mongshu has become the new gem-land in Myanmar after Hpakant. Recently, a total of 6749 thousand carats were explored from 227 gem mining blocks in Mongshu gem land during 2009, according to the Ministry of Commerce.

The No.1 Mining Enterprise is carrying out mining on the basis of mutual interest in cooperation with internal and external private entrepreneurs. Myanmar Ivanhoe Company Limited is exploring copper metal mining at Kyaesintuang and Sabeitaung in Monywa, and Cornerstone Resources (Myanmar) extracting zinc ore in Laukkai.

Similarly, No.2 Mining Enterprise is undertaking mining in collaboration with foreign companies. Moreover, it is carrying out mineral exploration in Heinde mining block joining with Myanmar Pongpipat Co., Ltd from Thailand.

“More minerals are found in late 1988. For example, Mongshu gem land has been found in 1988. Minerals are also discovered in Kayin State. Some said that minerals could be depleted due to excessive exploration and utilization in a short span. However, the current exploration of minerals is at the level of open mine. More minerals have been found by the use of heavy machinery.

Likewise, No.3 Mining Enterprise is carrying out mineral exploration together with internal and external private entrepreneurs on the basis of mutual interest. The ECI Mineral Private Co., of Singapore is producing international quality bright stone powder.

Myanma mining businesses are being handed over to national private entrepreneurs. The government granted mining permission to the Jade Dragon Gems Co Ltd, the Myanmar Sithu Company Limited, the Jing Po Aung Jade & Gems, the Yadana Tuangtan Company Limited and the Shwe Gon Gon Gem Company Limited in Phakant (Hpakant). Moreover, the Padamyar Ngaga Kyauksein Company Limited and the Khun Pa O Gems Jade Co Ltd are permitted to explore in Mongshu Gem Land Block.

Similarly, Myanmar VES Venture Co Ltd signed a ten-year deal for gems exploration with the investment of US$ 5 million as of 1 January 1993. In the sector of breeding pearls, permissions have been granted to national entrepreneurs in Magyi Pinhsaung, Zinyawkyun, Shwekyun, Domelkyun, Dunpale and Saint Luke pearl blocks. Moreover, other minerals are being produced in the respective gem blocks in the country.

5 members of Myanmar Construction Entrepreneurs Association (MCEA) will contest election as USDP

FIVE members of the Myanmar Construction Entrepreneurs Association (MCEA) will contest the November 7 election as Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) candidates, the association announced last week.

The group includes Dr Khin Shwe, president of the MCEA and chairman of Zaykabar Construction; U Win Myint, chairman of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI) and owner of Shwe Nagar Min; U Htay Myint, chairman of Yuzana Construction; U Yan Win, managing director of A1 Construction; and U Tint San from ACE Construction.

U Ko Ko Htway, a Central Executive Committee member of the MCEA, told The Myanmar Times the group would not have to resign from the association to take part in the election, after the association agreed at its September 4 annual general meeting to change its constitution to allow members to enter politics.

“Businessmen in foreign countries often take part in politics so that’s why we updated our constitution and allowed members to participate to politics without resign from the association. We felt that if we didn’t change some regulations that limit participation in politics there would be some disagreement between our members,” U Ko Ko Htway said after the meeting.

“So those candidates don’t need to quit the association; they will continue to hold their present positions,” he said.
A spokesperson from the UMFCCI said “six to 10” members, including U Win Myint, would stand as candidates, mostly for the USDP.

The UMFCCI altered its constitution last year to allow members to participate in politics.

Other members running as USDP candidates include U Aung Than Oo, president of the Myanmar Rice and Paddy Traders Association); U Tin Win, president of the Myanmar Rice Millers Association; and CEC members U Thein Han and U Soe Myint.

U Hla Shwe will stand as an independent candidate in the Amyotha Hluttaw constituency of Mawlamyine.
Most of the businessmen will stand for Amyotha Hluttaw, or upper house constituencies.

Dr Khin Shwe said on September 5 he would contest Yangon Region Amyotha Hluttaw constituency 9, which includes Kawhmu, Kungyangone and Twante townships.

“I will enter the election focusing on religion and social work because I made a lot of bridges and roads in my constituency after Cyclone Nargis,” he told The Monitor, which is run by U Hla Myint Swe, the head of Yangon City Development Committee’s Information Department.

When contacted he declined requests for an interview.

U Win Myint will contest Sagaing Region Amyotha Hluttaw constituency 3 (Kanbalu, Kyunhla, Ye-U and Taze townships), while U Htay Myint will stand in Tanintharyi Region Amyotha Hluttaw constituency Myeik and U Tint San will contest Ayeyarwady Region Amyotha Hluttaw constituency 1, which includes Pathein and Ngapudaw townships.

Burmese junta threatens to eliminate KIO post polls

In a chilling declaration, the Burmese ruling junta has announced that will eliminate the ethnic Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) after the countrywide elections on November 7, pointing out that it will be the first such instance in Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries, said local sources.

This is the first time that Burma’s military brass has officially spoken about eliminating KIO, which had a ceasefire agreement with the junta for over 16 years. The armed group also approved the junta-centric 2008 constitution.

Responding to the KIO’s August 30 statement, General Thein Sein, Prime Minister, who is spearheading the junta-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) made the threatening noises in the presence of leaders of the two groups that had much earlier split from the KIO.  He was speaking in Myitkyina, the capital of Kachin State a week ago, said sources close to the two groups.

Among the six issues in the KIO statement, it stated that it will transform the Kachin Independence Army (KIA), its armed wing only if genuine peace is brought about between the KIO and the junta, and a genuine federal union is restored in the country on the basis of 1947 Panglong Agreement signed by Kachin and other ethnic leaders.

During a special meeting with Lawayang-based Lasang Awng Wa Militia Group and Pangwa-based Border Guard Force (formerly New Democratic Army-Kachin), PM Thein Sein said the junta was going to eliminate the KIO as a first instance in ASEAN in the wake of the elections. Now, the regime will no longer accept even if the KIO surrenders weapons, the sources added. Continue reading “Burmese junta threatens to eliminate KIO post polls”
