Thai Energy Minister:Hatgyi Dam will proceed

Energy Minister Wannarat Charnnukul on Monday insisted that Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has not yet ordered a delay into the planned Hatgyi hydropower plant in Burma.He noted that the prime minister does not either learn about the proposals of the government’s human rights committee, which suggested additional assessment on the environmental impact given that the Dam on Salween River could lead to possible problems.

Energy Permanent Secretary Pornchai Rujiprapa said the project, undertaken by the Electricity of Thailand and Chinese counterparts, is still heading on. However, the environmental impact assessment could be extended to cover the human rights issue.

A committee will be set up, having the Energy Ministry as the coordinator. Meanwhile, Egat’s representative will act as the committee’s secretary. Joining the committee are representatives from the Energy Policy and Planning Office and other government units
