Ashin Kovida: “Change Will Come, No Matter What.“

Kovida_Jorn CHANGE WILL COME, NO MATTER WHAT. AS A BUDDHIST MONK, HE HAS BEEN ACTIVE IN THE FIELD OF HUMAN RIGHTS AND DEMOCRACY IN BURMA FOR YEARS. A DANGEROUS TASK, WHICH CAUSED HIM TO FLEE HIS COUNTRY IN 2006. HE CONTINUES HIS STRUGGLE FROM SWITZERLAND. ‘MORE PRESSURE IS NEEDED TO GET RID OF THE REGIME. BUT A DEMOCRACY WILL COME.’ Two years ago, large scale protests broke out among the people in Burma. Students, monks and others demonstrated against the military junta which has been ruling the country with an iron fist since the sixties. Because people filmed the protests with mobile phones, the whole world witnessed the events. Monk Ashin Kovida (1973) also followed the events from his new country Switzerland. He had fled Burma nine months earlier. Where he taught English in a monastery. He regularly spoke about subjects like democracy and human rights with his students, which is forbidden by the regime. He also talked to foreigners. “Most tourists in Burma only get to see the façade which the regime presents to them. I wanted to show them what was really going on.’ Because of this dissident behaviour he was in danger and decided to flee to Switzerland. A befriended Swiss couple was willing to help him. ‘It proved I was just in time. Two months after I left, my monastery was closed by the authorities.’ Continue reading “Ashin Kovida: “Change Will Come, No Matter What.“”

To expedite and implement conversion to the Border Guard Force (BGF), the Burmese Army has dispatched troops to the headquarters of the New Democratic Army-Kachin (NDA-K), a Kachin ceasefire group, which accepted the proposal in June, said a local source.

Early last week, half the number of Burmese troops in the Bhamo-based Infantry Battalion (IB) No. 236 were sent to Pangwa, the headquarters of NDA-K in eastern Kachin State close to the border with China’s Yunnan province, said a local source close to the battalion.

The troops from IB No. 236 left for the NDA-K’s capital Pangwa to form new army battalions under the BGF to be controlled by the Burmese Army, the source added.
Pangwa sources said, NDA-K is gearing up to accept the given percentage of Burmese soldiers to be inducted in the separate Kachin NDA-K battalions according to the agreement between the NDA-K and Burmese Army before Burmese soldiers from Bhamo departed for Pangwa. Militia recruitments ordered in North Tenasserim Division

October 12, 2009
HURFOM, Yebyu: Residents of Yebyu Township in North Tenasserim Division fear that recent orders from the Burmese Army to the local militias, ordering renewed militia recruitments in various villages in the Township, will increase the fees that local militias routinely extort from civilian villagers.
An associate of the Village Peace and Development Council (VPDC), from Yapu village in Yebyu Township, explained that increased militia recruitments in the area were the direct orders of the Southeast Command (SEC) and Coastline Command (CC), and that both the SEC and the CC plan to oversee militia training in Yebyu Township.
“In the last week of September, the command to recruit more militia troops was directly given to the VPDC office in Yapu village. My friend is working at the VPDC office in the village. Before, they just had 7 militia troops in our village. Now, they command that the militia grow to at least 20 troops, and more if possible. They commanded the village headman directly. The head commander in the Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) No. 282, which is based under the Southeast Command, will directly monitor the militia training,” he said.
Yapu village contains over 600 households. Most of families survive through farming, but a small amount of the village’s residents are jobless. HURFOM’s sources indicate that the majority of Yapu village’s residents are uninterested in joining the area’s militia; however, jobless individuals in Yapu are likely to see the militia recruitments as a chance to gain income and notoriety in Yapu. Myanmar biggest business organization to open office in China

YANGON, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) — The Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI), the biggest business organization in the country, will open a representative office in China later this month to strengthen bilateral trade activities with China as well as with other member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, sources with the UMFCCI said on Monday.

The representative office, named “Myanmar Liaison Office”, has been built in Nanning, capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southwest of China, the sources said, adding that, the office will be opened on the occasion of the 6th China-ASEAN trade fair scheduled for Oct. 20 to 24 in the same city.

Myanmar products will be showcased in 100 booths in the trade fair.

In the last 5th China-ASEAN trade fair, Myanmar won the best booth award.

China’s Nanning and Myanmar’s Yangon established friendship city relationship in July this year.

Meanwhile, a business center with India, Myanmar’s biggest beans exporting country, will be also set up soon, the sources said, adding that more such representative offices in neighboring countries will also be introduced for business expansion.

According to Chinese official statistics, China-Myanmar bilateral trade amounted to 2.626 billion U.S. dollars in 2008, up26.4 percent. Of the total, China’s export to Myanmar took 1.978 billion dollars.

Up to the end of May 2009, China’s contracted investment in Myanmar reached 1.331 billion dollars, of which that in mining, electric power and oil and gas respectively took 866 million dollars, 281 million dollars and 124 million dollars.

China now stands the 4th in Myanmar’s foreign investment line-up. (XINHUA)

Floods affecting Thailand nationwide

SI SA KET, Oct 12 (TNA) – Floods are continuing in varied areas of Thailand, with critical needs in some areas due to more overflowing torrents, while the national weather service warned that the weather system from China now covers the North and Northeast.

A ridge of moderate high pressure from the Asian land mass is covering much of Thailand north and east of the capital.

In the northeastern province of Si Sa Ket, second round of flash flooding has hit Si Sa Ket municipality. Inundation in some areas is over two metres deep due to the overflowing waters of the Mun River causing residents to move their valuables to higher ground.

In Phitsanulok’s provincial seat and Bang Rakam district over 30,000 rais (about 12,000 acres) of flooded paddy fields meant that farmers were unable to harvest their crops in time, meaning that they have lost most of their annual income. The farmlands now smell of rotten rice.

Provincial officials are planning a long-term solution against the flooding and to allocate budget for a flood retention area project known as Kam Ling (Monkey’s Cheeks).

In nearby Kamphaeng Phet province, incessant rain and the accumulated run-off from several other northern provinces quickly raised water levels in the Yom River, triggering flash run-offs overflowing into many houses as well as agricultural areas.

Meanwhile, floodwaters in Sam Ngam district of Phichit is more than two metres high.

Villagers used boats for transport and moved valuables to the roadside.

In Kanchanaburi province west of Bangkok, officials in Sai Yok, Thong Pha Phum and Sangkhla Buri districts warned motorists and drivers to drive carefully due to poor visibility from a dense fog covering the areas.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department warned that the ridge of a moderate high pressure weather system from China now covering the Northeast and the North of Thailand is causing thundershowers temperature drops one 1-3 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, torrential rain and isolated heavy rainfall is likely with winds in lower central, eastern and southern Thailand.

Tropical Storm Parma in the mid-South China Sea centred about 200 km east of Hainan Island, China. It is expected to be downgraded to become a tropical depression and will make a landfall at Hainan later on Monday. (TNA)
