Taungup: A complainant who accused a senior NLD leader of defamation left the town of Taungup for Sittwe secretly after a group of local residents attempted to attack him after the NLD leader was sentenced to two years in prison, reports one youth leader in the town.

“U Than Pe left our town for Sittwe, the capital of Arakan, secretly after some local people managed to attack him when one senior leader was sentenced to two years in prison because of his accusations in a defamation case,” the youth said.

87-year-old U Kyaw Khaing, who is president of the Taungup Township NLD, was sentenced to two years in prison by the township court on 13 July on charges of defamation that were filed by Than Pe. Than Pe is also a member of the NLD in Taungup Township.

“There is a rumor in our town that some of the local people tried to assassinate Than Pe in the night after U Kyaw Khaing was sentenced to two years in prison. So Than Pe likely fled to avoid the attack,” he added.

Most of the people in the town, including U Kyaw Khaing’s relatives, are angry with Than Pe after his charges of defamation resulted in the prison sentence for U Kyaw Khaing.

Than Pe charged U Kyaw Khaing in the Taungup court with defamation after U Kyaw Khaing dismissed him from the NLD due to misbehavior.

According to an NLD source, Than Pe was dismissed from the NLD after he collected donations from local residents in Taungup for Cyclone Nargis victims without the party’s approval.

U Kyaw Khaing prohibited Than Pe from collecting the donations from local residents, but he failed to comply with the order. Later, U Kyaw Khaing dispelled him from the NLD in accordance with an agreement by the party’s central committee.

After Than Pe was dismissed from the party, Than Pe charged U Kyaw Khaing with defamation.

According to a report from Sittwe, Than Pe is now joining the pro-junta Nationalist Party there.

The Township Peace and Development Council held a meeting yesterday about A(H1N1) in their Three Pagodas Pass office.

On the heels of reported cases from nearby townships, such as Sangkhlaburi, Thailand, residents worry about the outbreak of A(H1N1), colloquially referred to as Swine Flu.

Several members from 25 different Burmese governmental organizations joined the meeting. They included the Myanmar Women’s Affairs Organization (MWAF), the People’s Militia force, the fire brigade, the Union Solidarity and Development Association (USDA), and the health department, along with various quarter headmen and school officers.

“Because of A(H1N1) found in Sangkhlaburi Kanchanaburi province, people in TPP [Three Pagodas Pass] worry the virus will spread to TPP, so the TPDC and the health department held a meeting to explain to people how to prevent A(H1N1) from spreading and how to care for yourself,” said a resident who attended the meeting.

Last Thursday, one household found a confirmed case of A(H1N1) in Sangkhlaburi and a second has yet to be confirmed. They are being treated in Sangkhlaburi hospital. Sources told IMNA that many TPP shopkeepers now sell surgical masks to protect from A(H1N1).

TPP is a border township with many tourist visits everyday, and Sangkhlaburi is only 20 kilometers away from TPP Township.

“The TPP health department tests people who go to the Thai side [the smaller trading town in Thailand]; yesterday they tested from 1 p.m. until nighttime and today they are testing [for] A(H1N1) disease the whole day,” said another TPP resident.

According to health department staff, many people are suffering fever in TPP during the rainy season, a greater number than last year.

Win Tin, a Burmese prominent veteran journalist and leader of the opposition National League for Democracy (NLD), is not well. He is resting under medication.

Win Tin, who is 79, has not been at his office after suffering from an abnormal heartbeat since Thursday last week. He received a medical check-up this weekend, which included an x-ray check.

He told The Irrawaddy on Monday, “I have not been able to go to the office since Thursday because I felt very tired if I worked. My heartbeat was around 46-48 times per minute compared to a normal heartbeat of around 70 or 80 times.”

Win Tin spent 19 years in prison without proper meals and medical treatment. He was released from the infamous Insein Prison in September 2008

He has suffered from poor health several times since he was released from prison. His illnesses have included asthma, low blood pressure and heart disease.

During his time in prison, he also suffered from heart and prostate problems. Prison authorities regularly refused to provide him with proper medical care.

PHUKET, Thailand—Burmese Foreign Minister Nyan Win told his counterparts from Southeast Asian nations on Sunday that issues including the release of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other political prisoners recommended by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon have not necessarily been ruled out.

After an informal working dinner on Sunday, Surin Pitsuwan, the secretary-general of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), told reporters: “We have been briefed [by Nyan Win] about the visit of the [UN] secretary-general, and we have been told some issues recommended by the secretary-general should not be taken as [having] not been accepted because [they have] not been responded to. It will take time.”
Nyan Win’s comment could be interpreted to mean that Ban’s call to release Suu Kyi and all political prisoners is under consideration by the military regime.
However, some analysts said the remark could also be a way for the ruling generals to buy time, in light of the strong international criticism they have received over the ongoing trial of Suu Kyi.

Ban called for the release of all political prisoners during his trip to Burma in early July. His request to see Suu Kyi was turned down by the military regime.
