Demonstration for Release of Political Prisoner’s Marks Burma’s Human Rights Day

By Tun Kyaw: Bangladesh-based Burmese democracy activists staged a demonstration on Friday in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka to mark Burma’s Human Rights Day and to call for the release of political prisoners in Burma.
The demonstration was organized by the All Arakan Students and Youths Congress as part of the “Free Burma Political Prisoners Now!” campaign, which was launched in collaboration with the Assistance Association of Political Prisoners – Burma, and Forum for Democracy in Burma.

More than 30 activists from different organizations joined the demonstration and chanted the slogans of “Free Aung San Suu Kyi” and “Free All Political Prisoners in Burma”.

“We staged the demonstration especially to attract international pressure on the Burmese junta for the immediate release of political prisoners,” said Kyaw Myint, General Secretary (2) of the AASYC.

Their said in a statement that the campaign focus period will be from 13 March to 24 May, 209, as 13 March was Burma’s Human Rights Day, and 24 May is the day Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is due to be released from her six consecutive years of house arrest.
