While it is clear to see that the author of this article has a deep and sincere compassion for the people of Burma, s/he has unfortunately got a few crucial facts wrong. Un Nu, U Ba Swe and U Kyaw Nyein undoubtedly held key government positions in their time, but that was during the democratc period from 1948 to 1962. Regardless of what one might think of their governance and policies, it is a gross inaccuracy to label them "cronies" of General Than Shwe, and thereby dismiss the political activities of their daughters as a "sham". The military has their own select roup of candidates running for the 2010 election, and these special few will enjoy a great and unfair advantage - of that there is no doubt. However, it is totally outrageous to suggest that Than Than Nu, for instance, whose father U Nu was imprisoned and then exiled by General Ne Win, might in any way be a "Stoogette" of General Than Shwe.

Finally, I am at a loss to understand the "sins of the fathers" might be, and exactly what "blood soaked histories" the author might be referring to. Perhaps the author is unaware that there was a series of democratically elected governments in Burma after independence from the British, and that U Nu, U Ba Swe and U Kyaw Nyein were all well-respected political leaders and statesmen in their time, both at home, as well as internationally.

Homage to Aung San Suu Kyi :

Orchid

At the seat of the Kings
An orchid
Dances its night

In the street the voices
Of the cuckoo of the crane
And the peacock
Are tinkling

Charged with emotion
The harp disguises
The goat, the cow, the horse
And the elephant

At the bestiary of the Kings
An orchid
Languishes the day

The immediate and numerous international reactions to the veredict certify that Suu Kyi, is a strong willing global symbol in her struggle for peace and democracy.
The U.S. Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, said that she should never have been "tried and convicted." The president, Barack Obama, qualifyed the sentence as "unjust." The UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon called for her release, while the Security Council called for an emergency meeting and the EU is preparing to impose new sanctions against the military junta that rules Burma with an iron hand.
And China, the great supporters of the Burmese military dictatorship... once again keeps silent and pull profit from the situation.
Chapeau Mrs Aung San Suu Kyi

Apparently there is no end to the patience of 'world leaders' when it comes to dictators like Burma's junta. Hey, how long was Pinochet in power? Consider the coup in Honduras. Consider how many view Evo Morales of Boliva. No, the 'world leaders' tolerate anyone who allows the corporate business leaders to do as they please regarding the natural resources of their countries. World leaders have tolerated genocide in Rwanada and Europe. World leeaders throughout modern history have repeatedly shown that they care nothing for the human/civil/political rights of human beings who are not 'rich' and powerful in the business world.
But I think 'you' already are aware of all of this. Just posted to let 'you' know that some otheres are aware also of how the world's leaders truly view those they 'lead'---we're all basically cannon fodder and serfs to their monetary profit machines--otherwise 'they' havve no use for 'us.'
Long life to Aung San Suu Kyi.
