Burmese Army soldiers who were making their way from Northern Shan State to Kachin areas to reinforce their troops, arrested and interrogated civilians for no credible reasons, local sources reported.

On Nov 18, Burmese government soldiers arrested 10 local residents of Namjang village, Namhkam Township in Northern Shan State, a KLN reporter said. Some residents were severely beaten and later released on Nov 20, 2011.

Yawng Ting, a young man, fled from Burmese Army camp but four other villagers, Zahkung Yaw Zung, Zahkung Yaw Sau, Laman Dut and Lamai Awng Mai are still in detention, said sources.

Most villagers including local Church Pastor fled from homes since Burmese Army soldiers arrived. An aged woman, the mother of Zahkung Yaw Zung and Zahkung Yau Sau, was interrogated and beaten by soldiers.

5 Kachin youths were interrogated and tortured at Loi Je immigration checkpoint by government immigration police on Nov 18, 2011. No valid reason was given for the arrest other than being Kachin nationals. Their injuries were so serious that they required emergency treatments at Loi Je Hospital, reported a local source.

The Kachin civilian population is often targeted by the vaunted Burmese Army in retaliation for their impotent campaign to wipe out the KIA, said a Kachin observer. Despite the “flickers of progress” mentioned in the international media, reality-check on the ground indicates the continuing presence of horrendous rights violations perpetrated by the Burmese Army on the civilian population especially against the Kachins.
