Resistance Day

On 27th March, 2011, a ceremony to commemorate the 66th anniversary of the Anti Fascist Resistance Day was held at the headquarters of the NLD. About 300 people including Central Executive Committee members, veteran politicians, members of Committee Representing People’s Parliament, ethnic leaders, diplomats, NLD members and NLD youth wing and women wing members, representatives from NLD States and Divisions Committees attended the ceremony.

Vice Chairman U Tin Oo chaired the ceremony when U Ohn Kyaing, a CEC member conducted as a master of ceremony. Following the opening remarks made by U Tin Oo, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi delivered an introductory speech. She said in her speech that she would like to talk about connection between revolution and unity. The very reason for success of Anti Fascist Resistance in 1945 is a unity among our citizens. A simple definition of revolution is a radical change. To achieve a radical change, majority of the people must want a change and be ready to work in unity for that change.  Therefore, we need to be united if we want political or social great change. Not only must majority of people accept that there is a need for change but they also are responsible to work for that change. The will to succeed a revolution that will bring about democracy and human rights that will benefit us all is very important. Together with the will, we must have unity. Change will be possible only if we try together in unity based on that will.

Then U Win Htein read out the NLD statement No 6/03/11. The Vice Chairman U Tin Oo made a closing remark in which he said that this time was the best time and the role of the Tatmadaw was very important. They have been working for reconciliation for long time. That day, he had some words for Tatmadaw. There used to be ’60 points of soldiers’ ethics’ extracted from all speeches of Bogyoke Aung San on Tatmadaw that he made at military trainings or to ordinary people in order to set a concept, “power of people must influence on the Tatmadaw in the Parliament Democracy system”. Now, it just disappeared. He would like to emphasize two most important points out of 60. One point is that, “Comrades, it is wrong if whatever you do to people is not in accordance with the genuine will of the people” Another point is that, “Comrades, it is right if whatever you do to people is in accordance with the will that comes from the bottom of the heart of people.”

He continued that what he wanted to say to the soldiers was that they should try to know the genuine will of the people if they wanted reconciliation and togetherness with the people. They will earn people’s admiration again in this way. Another notable quotation was that ‘people does not smile because they dare not scowl’ meaning that people are not satisfied with them but dare not show their dissatisfaction because of fear. And he requested the soldiers to look at what is happening in Middle East and learn lessons about what happens in authoritarian countries when genuine will of the people emerges.

The ceremony ended at 13:30.
