PM Abhisit explains to Shin Corp the government aims to protect public interest

February 22, 2011
BANGKOK, 22 February 2011 (NNT)-Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has reiterated in the meeting with Shin Corporation’s executives that the government’s top priority is to protect the public benefits, assuring them that he is not involved for his political gains.

The ministry of information and technology has claimed that the company, Advance Info Services (AIS), has breached its concession terms and condition. The claim stemmed from former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra abusing his authority by passing the law that converted telecommunication concession fees into excise tax while he was in power in order to benefit his own company, Shin Corp., the parent company of Advance Info Service. As a result of that conversion, the government has lost 60 billion baht in revenue.

Minister of Information and Communication Technology Mr. Chuti Krairiksh has already set up a panel to study the case. According to Mr. Chuti, the only solution to the case is for the company to reimburse the loss to the Government. The panel is expected to conclude the case on 25 February 2011 before reporting the findings to the Cabinet in the next meeting. The concession case is scheduled to expire on 28 February 2011.
