Alongkorn to ask Myanmar to lift ban on Thai products
BANGKOK, 23 November 2010 (NNT) – Deputy Commerce Minister Alongkorn Ponlaboot says he is ready to discuss with Myanmar asking it to lift a ban on Thai products.
In light of Myanmar’s lifting the ban on 15 different products, including fruit, from Thailand, Deputy Commerce Minister Alongkorn Ponlaboot said he had asked Myanmar to do away with the ban on 4 additional types of fruit: rambutan, mangosteen, guava, and long-gong; given among the 7 types of fruit previously allowed to enter Myanmar, only one, durian, had potential for export to Myanmar.
However, Myanmar decided to allow only long-gong to enter the country, as it can not produce the fruit locally.
Thailand should concentrate on exporting products needed in Myanmar construction industry including Portland cement, roofing tiles, and building materials, as the country is in the process of development and there is high demand for these types of products, added Mr.Alongkorn.
