A rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) and a pack of homemade explosives exploded and injured four soldiers in Three Pagodas Pass Township near the Thai border on Aug. 25.

Border sources said the RPG and homemade explosives, which were packed together, exploded at 5:45 p.m. at block 4 in Three Pagodas Pass township, seriously injuring in the leg a Burmese army soldier who was trying to dispose of the device.

The injured soldier and two officers who were only lightly wounded are from the Burmese army Light Infantry Battalion No. 32 based in Three Pagodas Pass.

A fourth soldier who was also lightly wounded was a member of the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA).

“The device exploded as the Burmese soldier attempted to bury it after it had been removed from the site where it had been planted,” said the source, a member of the New Mon State Party (NMSP).

It was the second bomb blast in Three Pagodas Pass during August. A motorcycle bomb went off in town on Aug. 16, but no one was reported killed or injured.

Burmese military officials also found two other unexploded devices at different places on Aug. 14 and 16.

One was near the government’s Settlement and Land Record Department and the second was by an electric generator plant.

The Burmese army has tightened security in the town, but no one has claimed reponsibility for the bombs.

Tensions between junta’s troops and ethnic ceasefire groups in the area have been rising over the border guard forces (BGF) issue.

A separate source in the NMSP said four of their members met Maj-Gen Thet Naing Win at the Southeast Command Region in Moulmein, the capital of Mon State on Aug 23.

“They told us not to disrupt the election and to inform them [the Burmese military] by Sept. 1 if we agree to accept the BGF,” he said.

Though Ye Myint had requested several meetings previously, NMSP leaders refused to meet him since the party rejected the junta’s BGF deadline on April 28.

The Burmese Junta is putting pressure on three armed groups—the NMSP, DKBA, and Karen Peace Force (KPF)—in the Three Pagoda Pass area to transform their troops into BGF.

The junta, meanwhile, is preparing to force the DKBA and KPF to join the BGF and the military have already prepared a list of the names of soldiers from the DKBA and KPF who have been inducted into the BGF.

The regime is calling two units of the BGF in the area “Taung Sone 1” and “Taung Sone 2” after the name of a mountain near Three Pagodas Pass.

Many of an estimated 50 DKBA soldiers in Three Pagodas Pass have decided to join DKBA brigade 5 led by Col Saw Lah Pwe, who is better known as Mr. Beard, and have defected to Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) brigade 6, near the Three Pagodas Pass.

Observers at Three Pagodas Pass said there will be fighting between junta troops and the cease-fire groups in the area if the junta attempt to use forces to impose the BGF.

Meanwhile, the junta has reinforced its artillery at Three Pagodas Pass, possibly in preparation for long-distance shelling of KNLA brigade 6 and the NMSP base nearby.

A new brigade that the junta plans to set up in the future at Three Pagodas Pass could also be used against the NMSP and KNLA if tensions escalate.
