Court issues arrest warrant for Thaksin for evading trial
29 July 2010 (NNT) – The Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions has issued an arrest warrant for self-exiled former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra for evading the false asset declaration trial.
The Supreme Court was initially scheduled to proceed with Mr Thaksin’s case involving his false declarations of assets today. However, upon the absence of the defendant with no excuse given, the court decided to issue an arrest warrant for him and temporarily suspend the case until he was captured.
Mr Thaksin is alleged of breaching the Constitution and the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) Act by intentionally filing false asset declarations to the NACC.
Earlier, the court ordered the seizure of 46.73 billion THB as state property. The verdict indicated that the self-exiled premier and his ex-wife, Khunying Potjaman Na Pombejra, had concealed their assets through nominees. The court also ruled that Mr Thaksin was guilty of being unusually rich and abusing his power while in office by implementing policies to favor his family’s telecommunication business, Shin Corp.
