21st Anniversary of 8.8.88 Burma Democracy Uprising – New York City
In commemoration of those heroes who gave their lives for freedom, democracy and justice for Burma.

Burmese democratic forces and their friends will be holding a protest in front of the office of the Burmese Permanent Mission to the UN on August 8, 2009, a historic day for Burma, in commemoration of those heroes who gave their lives for freedom, democracy and justice for Burma.

21 years ago, on August 8, 1988 (8888), people from all walks of life throughout Burma came out in unison to call for freedom, democracy and justice in Burma. The military regime responded to these peaceful calls by using lethal force, killing about 3000 innocent people including students and monks.

Even to this day, the Burmese military regime continues its atrocities. They harass and arrest human rights activists including Noble Laureate Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. Many activists were killed during recent peaceful demonstrations. Many more died in interrogation camps and some died while imprisoned due to systematic abuse targeted to political prisoners.

Everyone is welcome to give their respect and support to those who have sacrificed their lives for democracy.
